April 2019

There was some intense competition and incredible shots during our March Madness 2019 Tournament held on Saturday. It was also good to see spectators out cheering on all the players. Sandy was very busy taking hundreds of pictures during the tournament. You can see some of them in this newsletter. A slow-motion video of games played was good entertainment while we ate our hamburgers and freshly baked cookies after the tournament.

Lots of treats were handed out for the skill challenges. It was fun to see so many people trying to put the ball in the garbage can in the Spring Clean-up Challenge, sinking a 3-pointer in the 3-Point Challenge, and tapping that Pickleball on the Edge Challenge. In the end, we did have to modify the challenges in order to give away some of the treats, but I think a good time was had by all.

Thank you to all of the volunteers who helped make this a successful tournament. Volunteers set up on Friday afternoon, prepared and served food, picked up fresh buns in Ladner Saturday morning, set up tables for the luncheon, helped out with the skill challenges, worked at the scorekeeping, kept time, and then helped clean up the gym after the tournament. As Landon communicated during his talk after the luncheon, we have a great community of pickleballers coming out to our sessions.

Thanks to Mario's Restaurant and Gracie's for contributing to the $30 gift certificates given to each of the first place team members.

Please note: If you are an advanced beginner / intermediate player and are planning to stay after the skill development session and play in the following advanced beginner / intermediate session at 11:45AM, then you need to remember to sign in after the skill session and pay the fee. Thank you.

Our current local charity that we will be supporting through SDBC Pickleball is:

Delta Meals on Wheels

Delta Meals on Wheels Society volunteers have been delivering hot meals to residents of Ladner and Tsawwassen since 1974, so there's a lengthy list of satisfied clients. Some recipients have been getting meals, which are available to people of any age, for years. Governed by a local volunteer board, Meals on Wheels is a registered charity. Meals are prepared at KinVillage in Tsawwassen and picked up mid-morning by volunteer drivers.

Meals are delivered five days a week, including holidays, and extra meals can be ordered for the weekends. Recipients are charged $6 per meal and payment is collected monthly. Volunteers who deliver meals do not accept payment. "We try to keep the fees low," said Delta Meals on Wheels president Harry Neufeld, "and this means we need donations to cover our expenses.

Families are often concerned about the well-being of elderly parents living alone and the regular contact with Meals on Wheels drivers provides an informal safety check on recipients. "Loneliness is a reality and the relationships that develop between the volunteer drivers and recipients is important."

For information about Meals on Wheels, call Deltassist, which provides telephone answering service, at 604-946-9526.

Lost and Found

If you find you forgot something in the gym after a pickleball session, we will be putting items in the lost and found box in the church's coat rack area located outside of the washrooms.

General Rules of Play at SDBC

  • Please sign in for your session but do not arrive to sign in more than 30 minutes before the session you wish to play in begins.
  • In consideration of others playing at the current session, please do not enter the gym any earlier than 5 minutes prior to the start of your session. Please remain outside or in the church foyer.
  • Only attend a maximum of one playing session per day (exception: Skills Session)
  • Remember to pay the $2 per player fee at the beginning of your session.
  • Wear gym shoes to prevent injury from slipping.
  • Bring your own water bottle.
  • Please refrain from coaching fellow players unless they have asked for coaching.
  • When there are 4 or more players waiting, all games end when one of the teams reaches 9 points. No 2 point difference.
  • After your game, place your paddle in the rack oriented for winner or non-winner. The next four players to go out will be according to the orientation of the closest paddle to the beginning of the rack.
  • At the end of the final session of the day, please help clean up and put away all the equipment and chairs. The gym must be vacated within 10 minutes of the end of the session, in order for the church to be secured.
  • Level of Play: Play at the session that is appropriate for your skill level. If you need any assistance determining your skill level, please ask one of the hosts.
  • Rating Descriptors: Skill level ratings can be broken down into a range between 1.0-5.0. An advanced player is highly skilled and has mastered third shots, dinks, and lobs, and understands body and court position. Find your rating here.
