Isthmus Project to Bring Innovative Idea to Reality

The program’s goal is to provide a front door for health system innovators – whether they be faculty physicians, pharmacists, residents, nurses, staff or others – to seek support for their creative ideas and projects that aim to achieve better health outcomes or to solve problems facing UW Health patients, providers and the health system but that are also scalable to create value beyond UW Health and UW-Madison, according to Thomas “Rock” Mackie, Isthmus Project director, and UW Health chief innovation officer.

Isomark test detects infections two days before formal diagnosis

A device from a Madison-based startup has been shown to detect infections two days before they could be diagnosed in a clinical setting. That’s from a recent study published in the scientific journal of the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma.

UW-Madison scientist allowed to resume controversial flu research

March 6, 2019
Controversial research at UW-Madison to make a deadly flu virus more dangerous, halted by the government in 2014, has been approved to start again. The work by campus scientist Yoshihiro Kawaoka involves modifying bird flu viruses such as H5N1 so they can spread among ferrets, an animal model for studying the flu in humans.

Could we soon be able to detect cancer in 10 minutes?

February 24, 2019
About seven years ago, researchers at the US DNA sequencing company Illumina started to notice something odd. A new blood test it ran on 125,000 expectant mothers looking for genetic abnormalities such as Down’s syndrome in their foetuses returned some extremely unexpected signals in 10 cases. Chillingly, it dawned on them that the abnormal DNA they were seeing wasn’t from the foetuses but was, rather, undiagnosed cancer in the mothers.

NIH redoubling support in search for new antibiotics

The National Institutes of Health is redoubling support for UW-Madison researchers scouring the world for new sources of antibiotics. This comes as more than two million drug-resistant infections are reported every year, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
