Here's more from Marshall AD Hamrick during his 60 Minutes appearance to discuss legalized sports gambling. Hamrick: "It's very tempting. It's very tempting. […] And most athletic directors that I've spoken with feel the same way. It's like, ‘oh no, it's here. What do I do?’ […] that little bit of information could make a big difference. I met with all our medical staff and absolutely no information is out there on injury, period. You don't tell your-- your wives, you don't tell your brother-in-laws, you don't tell anybody. […] If you were an 18, 19-year-old person from a difficult background and you didn't have a lot and someone put their arm around you and said 'Hey, you know, don't want Marshall to lose tonight, but, you know, if it gets late in the game and it's two touchdowns, you miss a tackle. Drop a pass, fumble.' That can happen." Links include video of the segment. (linklink)
The Raleigh News & Observer's Carter chronicles additional push back, this time from current student-athletes, for the NCAA on it's 'Day In the Life of a Student-Athlete' commercial that's been airing during March Madness. North Carolina MBB student-athlete Manley: "I’d say one thing before we start anything. That is not the life of an athlete, by any means. By any means.I don’t even think a generic athlete has a life like that, to be honest. I don’t even know why they made that commercial but, anyways." Iowa forward Cook: "Completely inaccurate, honestly." Washington guard Crisp: "I feel like they left out a few things." UNC's Maye went deeper, ended with, "I don’t think it really showed a great depiction of the balance that we have." More. (link)
The Carousel: Cal AD Knowlton decides to make a MBB change, says he'll use a search firm to assist. Attendance for the Golden Bears dipped to an average of 5,627 from 8,910 just two seasons ago. (link); ECU AD Gilbert starting to contact candidates for his WBB opening, no timeline set for the hire. (link); I always find it interesting when a President/Chancellor chimes in on a hire. Washington State Prez Schulz says an HC with a notable "system" is what "fits the type of student-athlete we’re going to get in Pullman." (link)
Apple may not have an eye on acquiring sports rights, but what if Apple acquired Disney? Variety's Spangler writes on the rumor that some on Wall Street think is possible. RBC analysts Cahall & Kulp: "Content is a major focus for Apple, target size is not an issue, and Disney offers an avenue to diversify away from hardware without diluting the strong Apple brand. [...] We like Disney’s fundamentals. Assuming Apple sees the same thing and has the cash, investor anticipation of a prospective transaction only adds conviction to the momentum we see in Disney’s shares." Spangler: "But would Apple shareholders support such a bet-the-company move? Assuming a 40% premium for Disney, the deal would carry a hefty $237 billion price tag. If Apple investors balk, Disney could consider spinning off assets like ESPN and theme parks to make the deal more palatable." (link)
Check this out...a massive Gallup survey from 2014 that received input from 2M employees & more than 300K business units found "a company’s productivity depends, to a high degree, on the quality of its managers." Ok, no surprise there. But, consider this, "The study showed that managers didn’t just influence the results their teams achieved, they explained a full 70% of the variance. In other words, if it’s a superior team you’re after, hiring the right manager is nearly three-fourths of the battle." WSJ's Walker continues on key hiring practices to identify the right managers who can fully engage their teams, of note, "One highly questionable tradition is the persistent urge to promote superstars into management roles. A growing body of evidence suggests there’s a weak correlation between an employee’s isolated talent and their leadership ability, and that quiet, selfless, middling performers often would be better choices. Gallup advises companies to seek out managers who infect their teams with a sense of purpose and function more like 'coaches' than conventional top-down bosses." More. (link)

Kentucky MBB is on to the Sweet 16 & Deputy AD Peevy talks to INFLCR Founder & CEO Cavale for AthleticDirectorU about always being ready to seize the moment on social media. Peevy arrived in Lexington just a few months ahead of Cats HC Calipari, which also coincided with the rise of Twitter. Notable from Peevy, "The good thing for me is that it made me have to talk to my basketball coach two to three times a day. […] With the Student-Athletes, it’s just like an interview. We train them to interview, why wouldn’t we train them to how to interact on social media because it is an interview every time they post. […] Social media is one of the best ways to let people know who you are at the core quickly….without giving a major lecture." More. (link)
The NIT is experimenting with a rule that resets the short clock to 20-seconds, not 30, on an offensive rebound. TCU HC Dixon: "We’re heading that way, so you better get to like it. I think that one is going to be here to stay, so I’m going to say we like it." (link); Baylor WBB HC Mulkey says she's shifted her thinking a bit on the topic of graduate transfers after former LSU student-athlete Jackson has helped lead the Bears to its best season in several years. Mulkey: "It can devastate a program when you lose a graduate transfer that you spend all this time with. But yet, there's also those programs that reap those rewards on the other end. And we understand it could happen to us." (link)
USA Today's Berkowitz continues his MBB HC & WBB HC bonus tracking. Way too many to list here, but if you're interested in a particular coach or program that's in the NCAA Tourney (even some in the NIT), they're likely in Berkowitz's Twitter feed. (link); Rutgers Wrestling HC Goodale has netted $54K in bonuses for an outstanding post-season run by his student-athletes against a base pay of $180K. (link)
Oregon State Prez Ray announces he will step aside at the conclusion of his five-year deal in June 30, 2020. In his letter: "Personally, my health is very good. Yet, I will be almost 76 years old when I step down as president, and I view my job as including my best effort to assist this wonderful university in transitioning to new leadership. Effective July 1, 2020, I will begin a sabbatical and transition to the College of Liberal Arts as a professor of economics." Ray assumed the presidency on July 31, 2003. (link); USF goes with SMU Provost/VP for Academic Affairs Currall as the school's seventh president. Pending BOG confirmation, he starts July 1. Currall: "I am thrilled to be selected to lead the University of South Florida at such a pivotal time in its history. USF’s trajectory is unlike any other public university in the country, and there is so much promise. I’m deeply grateful to the Board of Trustees and the USF community for the opportunity to build on the momentum created during President Genshaft’s transformational tenure." (link)
The Oregonian's Canzano continues his hard line on Pac-12 leadership, "problems won't go away until the commissioner does." Canzano wonder if the exit of Oregon State Prez Ray & "whispers UCLA Chancellor Block could retire in 2020," both longtime supporters of Commish Scott, could tip the scales. In closing, "Conference members have to feel like they’re in a generational dilemma. Fire Scott now and risk the appearance to potential investors that the house is in disarray? Or make a move on Scott now, hire someone with credibility, and send a message that things have turned for the better?" (link)
The News-Gazette's Tate argues Illinois needs to repair its MBB brand quickly, "It's the brand that matters. It sets the pecking order that prospective athletes follow." Tate points to the Illini's ties to recruiting-rich areas like St. Louis & Chicago, "...the brand is what high school athletes consider it to be — with a lonely three NCAA tournament wins in 14 years. Fourteen years!" (link)
Deepest condolences to the Georgia Tech family as FB student-athlete Adams passed away on Saturday. Reasons for his passing were "natural causes." Yellow Jackets HC Collins: "In the short time that I have had the privilege and honor of knowing Brandon, I admired and respected him, first and foremost as a terrific human being, but also as an outstanding teammate and leader." (link, link)
Also Noticed: The NCAA MBB Tourney delivers "historic" first round audiences across all platforms with a 6.1/14 metered market HH rating/share, ties with 2015 as the highest marks in 28 years. Friday's first primetime window was highest mark in 28 years (7.7/15) and NCAA March Madness Live set all-time records in live hours and live streams for first round coverage, both up 20%+ year-over-year. (link); The first wave of Operation Varsity Blues defendants will appear in federal court today, including former USC staffers Heinel, Khoroshahin, Janke and Vavic, as well as on-leave Wake Forest Volleyball HC Ferguson, former Georgetown Tennis HC Ernst and former UCLA Men's Soccer HC Salcedo. (link); Behind the Law360 paywall is more, but for now: "A South Carolina federal judge on Friday shot down a suit by the former basketball referee coordinator for the Sun Belt Conference, ruling the conference's commissioner was not out of bounds..." (link); Oregon is the only school to have the MBB and WBB teams in the NCAA Sweet 16, but Kentucky, Gonzaga and Michigan State women have a chance to advance today. (link); Three point attempts in this year's NCAA MBB Tournament are nearly 41 per game, compared to just over 38 last year and approximately 35.5 the year before. (link)
