Time Change this Sunday March 31 move your clocks ahead 1 hour.

We have been exploring how God has moved closer to us.  The Tabernacle, and the Covenants are expressions of God taking great steps to move closer.  The ultimate move of God however, is Jesus.  He took on flesh, dwelt among us and gave His life as a ransom to bring us back to God.  Now it is our turn to draw near and take intentional steps toward greater intimacy with God.

Baptism is the sign of the new covenant relationship with God through Jesus Christ. Therefore, it is one of the greatest joys of the church to celebrate baptism.  It is an incredible picture of identifying with the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus and it is a step of obedience that honors the Lord beautifully.

The word "baptize" or "baptism" occurs 73 times in the New Testament and it is alluded to even more.  So it is important to God.  Jesus commanded us to baptize people in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.  On Sunday, we will be exploring just how significant those names are to our new life and identity that is portrayed in baptism.

As an international congregation we have people who come from differing practices on how they administer baptism.  But it is important to not focus to intently on the differences in practice, rather we want to celebrate what baptism portrays - new life and new identity in Jesus Christ.

R. C. Sproul has some insightful counsel on keeping the focus in the right place concerning baptism.

My conclusion is that the question of the mode of baptism should not divide Christians. The issue has been examined and debated for two thousand years, but full agreement is no closer. This is an area of church practice where we are called to forbear with one another and not cast aspersions against those who practice a mode different from the one we prefer. The bottom line is that everyone is trying to say basically the same thing through whatever mode is employed—that the recipient is included in the body of Christ and that he or she has been cleansed from sin. The mode that we use should not be a cause of divisions in the church. - R.C. Sproul

Join us in this incredible celebration.  I pray what we witness through baptism, and the passages we explore will help us all to move a step or two closer in intimacy with the Lord.
