WE NEED YOU!
LAWTON PTA BOARD NEEDS YOU! We want YOU to be our next PTA Board member! We’re looking for creative problem-solvers who are comfortable delegating and who can help us focus on the agenda. A sense of humor is a big plus—and if you know how to say “no” without provoking a tantrum, even better.

If you’re ready to play a substantial role in supporting our school, we want to hear from you! We're still recruiting for three open positions.

Please contact vicepresidents@lawtonelementary.org to express your interest and for more information.
RUN LIKE THE WIND
Lawton's Run Like the Wind students participated in the Running of the Beavers to support Ballard High School with Coach Cher Edwards and many of their family members. Students spent a beautiful Saturday morning running at Golden Gardens. Nice job, Dolphins!
ADVOCACY NEWS
Last week, the Seattle School Board approved the district's 2019-2024 Strategic Plan, which sets priorities and educational goals for the next five years. See the summary below on closing the equity gap.

PRIORITIES
  1. High-Quality Instruction and Learning Experiences: Educate the whole child through high-quality instruction and learning experiences that accelerate growth for students of color who are furthest from educational justice, with an intentional focus on African American males.
  2. Predictable and Consistent Operational Systems: Develop operational systems that provide a predictable and consistent experience to meet the needs of students and families and allow them to focus on learning (transportation, nutrition services, student assignment).
  3. Culturally Responsive Workforce: Develop a culturally responsive workforce so teachers, leaders, and staff will effectively support students and families.
  4. Inclusive and Authentic Engagement: Partner with students, families, and communities who are furthest from educational justice by conducting inclusive and authentic engagement.

Find detailed information on the district's plan here.

NEW MAGNOLIA GIRLS TROOP 80
Hello friends and families,

I would like you to know about a brand new scout program starting in Magnolia for girls. A year ago the Boy Scouts of America changed their name to Scouts BSA and started allowing girls to join their Cub Scouts programs. A little over a month ago BSA started allowing the formation of all girl troops.

The Seattle neighborhood of Magnolia has a very rich history of scouting, with the BSA Troop 80 about to celebrate its 100th anniversary. I am thrilled to announce the start of a Girls Troop 80 in Magnolia. A number of girls have already joined the troop, and we hope many others will be interested in joining and becoming founding members of this new troop.

There will be an informational kickoff meeting on April 3rd, 2019 at 7:00 p.m. at the Magnolia Church of Christ hall. We welcome all girls ages 11-17 and their parents to come to the meeting and learn about what the Scouts BSA program has to offer your daughter.

For those interested in helping support this new scout troop in other ways, we’ve created a GoFundMe account to help get the girls troop up and running with some basic supplies and scouting equipment. All donations will be greatly appreciated: https://www.gofundme.com/new-magnolia-girls-troop-80

Please share this information with anyone you know who might be interested in joining, and please feel free to reach out to me with any questions.

PARENT EDUCATION NIGHT: INTERNET SAFETY
SAVE THE DATE: Tuesday, April 23 from 6:00-7:30PM. Childcare is available.

Does your child have access to a computer, tablet, or smartphone? Does your child watch videos on YouTube? If so, it's time to learn more about keeping your child safe on the Internet

Mark your calendars for our PTA-sponsored Parent Education Night on Technology and Internet Safety. Well-known speaker, Stefanie Thomas, will present an educational session covering cyberbullying, online gaming, sexting, cell phone and internet tips, and online posting. Stefanie Thomas is an internet safety expert who has worked with law enforcement regarding the exploitation of children online.

While this is an all-school parent education event, it does coincide with our all-member PTA meeting. We would like as many members in attendance as possible to vote on the PTA budget for the 2019-2020 school year. You must be a PTA member to vote. Please attend the PTA work meeting, followed by Stefanie Thomas' presentation.

In the meantime, check out Common Sense Media for some helpful tips on online safety.
