Supporting Low-income, Non-custodial, Unmarried Fathers in Navigating Substance Abuse and Child Welfare Systems

This breakout session will focus on strategies to support fathers who are experiencing multiple issues/barriers including, substance abuse, child welfare, and lack of parent education. Presenters will discuss how to help fathers overcome these barriers so their families and children can succeed. Discussion will focus on The FATHER Project, a proven 20-year model responsible fatherhood program. Participants will be encouraged to share their experiences and the experts will facilitate discussion on effective strategies in working with fathers to navigate the child welfare system, and help fathers reduce or eliminate barriers that prevent them from being involved with their children both emotionally and financially.
 

This is Your Brain on Adolescence

 

Ken Winters, PhD, Senior Scientist, Oregon Research Institute (MN branch), Adjunct Faculty, Department of Psychology at the University of Minnesota
 

This breakout session will provide a brief overview of adolescent brain development, the implications of brain maturation on adolescent development, and how practitioners can use this emerging science in prevention and treatment of substance abuse and related behavioral disorders.
 

Addiction as an Attachment Disorder: Clinical Presentation and Implications

 

ThanhVan Vu, MPS, LADC, LPCC, Clinical Trainer at the Minnesota Center for Chemical and Mental Health
 

This breakout session will explore the clinical presentation of addiction (symptoms and etiology) through the lens of attachment theory. In particular, how attachment patterns may manifest in use patterns and impact relational dynamics. The presenter will highlight treatment implications of conceptualizing addiction through the lens of attachment theory, taking into consideration clinical applications of attachment conceptualizations; mending the divide of impaired attachment by creating the capacity for attachment.
