DBS NEWSLETTER

29th March 2019

From Mark McVeigh, Principal

Dear DBS Parents,

Two of the highlights of the year occurred this week. One was the success of our students at the World Scholar’s Cup, which Ms Lovatt organised. Of the hundreds of students competing, all DBS teams qualified for the Global Round and there were fabulous individual achievements, particularly by Minnie, Tai, and Yoyo. This is evidence of our enhanced curriculum, academic excellence and the focus on teamwork and determination.

The other highlight was the first ever finals of ‘Denla’s Got Talent’. This truly demonstrated the wide range of students’ incredible abilities, involving music and dance. Congratulations to the winners, Wha Wha and Pan. Creativity is certainly being encouraged at DBS!

The DBS Advisory Board met this week, and reported how impressed they were with the progress that the School is making. We were pleased to welcome back Dr Enrico Bertelli to work with our students to build their own musical instruments and perform. Mrs Fineman’s Y2 Fox class assembly, on the history of flight, was superbly presented, and illustrated well the innovative and effective DBS learning process. Mrs McVeigh organised the Y7 sports leaders’ visit to the Pak Kret boys’ home, reinforcing the DBS commitment to service.

It was good to see some of you at the EY Coffee Morning, run by Ms Labram and Mrs Skinner; and the Y7&8 presentation on social media dangers by Mrs McVeigh, Mr Mann and Ms Van Gils.

We have learnt about individual student successes this week, including that of Nammon at the KLM Swimming Championship 2019; Ethan and Freddie Hall at the KL Tigers rugby tournament; and Mek’s football academy progress.

This is just to remind you about the Principal’s Seminar at 8.30am on Wednesday 3rd April, which will include strengths of DBS and exciting news about future developments. The Senior Management Team and I will be available to answer questions, too. I very much hope that you will be able to join us.

Lisa joins me in sending you our very best wishes,

Mark McVeigh

Today saw the first ever finals of Denla’s Got Talent. 16 acts (4 per House) battled it out on behalf of their respective Houses. In Pre-Prep the audience were treated to a wide selection of performances, from dance routines and vocalists to saxophone playing and comedy sketches. The Prep final was a real testament to the wide ranging talents of the students, from music and dance collaborations, exquisite singing, instrumental virtuosity and student compositions. Massive congratulations to every single student who took part. The winners are as follows:

Pre-Prep

1st place - Wha Wha
2nd place - Iris
3rd place - Mark

Prep

1st place - Pan
2nd place - Baibua & Aom
3rd place - Pinky

Earlier this week, 15 students from Y5 to 8 competed at the World Scholar’s Cup in Bangkok, with hundreds of other students. It was a new experience for all involved, with many exciting rounds including Team Debates, Collaborative Writing and Scholar’s Bowl. The students worked extremely hard, and came back with fantastic results, including a gold medal for Tai in the Science category, a Top 10 place for Minnie in Creative Writing, and a Top Scholar Award for Yoyo. To highlight their success, all students have also qualified for the Global Round. This is a fantastic achievement, and we wish them the best of luck in the next stage of the competition!
The EY1 Jellyfish Class have been learning about texture. They have been sorting items into categories depending on whether the objects are HARD, SOFT, BUMPY or SMOOTH.
On Monday 25th and Wednesday 27th March, DBS was pleased to welcome back Dr Enrico Bertelli of Conductive Music. Students from Y1-4 worked with Dr Bertelli and conducted a series of experiments to explore conductivity. They learned about positive and negative, and conductors and non-conductors, before building their own musical instruments and performing a short piece together as a class.
On Thursday, the Fox class took children and adults at DBS on a tour through the history of flight. They acted out scenes looking at important inventors who paved the way for the air travel we use today. They all worked incredibly hard to explain with confidence the different stages inventors go through in order to create new inventions and even showed the audience some of their own designs for the future!
Y4 children have been learning about density! They now understand that high density liquid will sink to the bottom and low density liquid will float to the top. They investigated if the density of water can be changed by adding different amounts of sugar and our final product is a multicoloured sugar tower that shows solutions with different densities!
As part of their Viking topic in Humanities, Y6 students created their own Viking longboat models! Linking History and DT, they created different designs and evaluated these before choosing their final design. They had to follow clear specifications for their boat, including the ability to float and withstand strong waves before launching their boats in the School pool. All students also managed to use recycled objects which helped to raise environmental awareness as part of the project.
On Wednesday, the Y7 DBS Sports Leaders visited the Pak Kred Boy's Home to run a sports session with some of the residents. The session was led with great enthusiasm by Mr Higgins and Mr Plowright, developing each individuals skills and team work. The DBS students were great representatives of the school, engaging and supporting, whilst having fun.
DBS was overwhelmed by the generosity of its students and parents during the 'Toy and Book' charity donation day! Aware that there are many children in Bangkok/Nonthaburi who are without any toys and books, the Student Council organised and promoted the event, resulting in a fantastic response. Our heartfelt thanks go out to all those who donated.
