Congratulations Freya and Freddie and all the Cheeky Monkeys out there!
D.I.S.C.O.

The mini section End of Season Disco was held on Friday. With glad rags on, music playing, balloons gallore and glow bands at the ready there was much dancing and singing, in fact the dance floor hardly cleared all night. Parents were looked after with the bar open so everyone was happy. What a lovely way to round off the season.  Thanks to all the helpers (we think they had a bit of fun too!!!)

POLO DAY 2019
POLO DAY SPONSORED BY
Over 200 children signed up and took part in the Polo Day Tournament on Sunday.  The weather was perfect for this end of season event for the Mini Section and there was some brilliant hockey on show from all the age groups.  They had obviously been listening during all those training sessions!

We were delighted to welcome our sponsors, St Edmund's School who very kindly handed out goodies to our little superstars.  It has been a great partnership and we thank them for their involvement and support.

A very big thank you to everyone that took part on the day and particularly all those 'grown ups' who did their bit and made sure that the children had a great time.

Although  the intention of Polo Day is to get everyone mixing, and players of all abilities taking part, this didn't detract from the competitive nature of the games. Chickens, Bats, Duckies and Monkeys battled until the final whistles to secure the winners medals in their age groups, and the champions in each age group were as follows:-

U8 Mixed - Funky Chickens
U10 Girls - Cheeky Monkeys
U10 Boys - Funky Chickens
U12 Girls - Cheeky Monkeys
U12 Boys - Batty Bats

With all the scores added the overall winners were the Cheeky Monkeys who were awarded the Polo Day Cup by Edward O'Connor, Head of St Edmunds School.

As is tradition, the Mini Section also takes this opportunity to award the annual prizes for those players who have developed, trained and performed particularly well.  These are difficult decisions to make and are not taken lightly.  Our roll of honour for this year is as follows:-

Indoor Player Awards

U12 Girls - Freya Sonnen (top left photo)
U12 Boys - Ollie Curtiss
U10 Girls - Tempe Simmons
U10 Boys - Noah Slater

Outdoor Player Awards

U12 Girls - Kate Boffey
U12 Boys - Freddie McMullan
U10 Girls - Lottie Singfield
U10 Boys - Freddie Post
U8 Girls - Eleanor Champion
U8 Boys - Jack Chapman-Falconer

Goal keeper Award

Jointly Awarded - Lara Mears & Ollie Triggs.

Mini Section - Club Person of the Season

MATCH REPORTS
U14 Boys A team EH Cup Regional Tournament

Canterbury U14 boys travelled to Old Merchant Taylors HC on a glorious sunny Sunday for their EH cup regional tournament. With only the top team from the day able to progress to the EH cup finals in May the team knew how important it was to start on the front foot and work hard for the full 30 minutes of all 3 games.

The first game of the day saw Canterbury pitched against a well organised Harleston Magpies team, but it was Canterbury who started strong, creating lots of chances and resulting in a goal in the 6th minute from captain Thomas Izzard. Canterbury kept pushing hard, but good defending from Harleston Magpies prevented us from scoring again in the first half. Canterbury continued to battle hard in the second half, creating more chances and displaying some great team play, resulting in two further goals for Thomas. Final score 3-0 to Canterbury. Man of the match was Thomas Izzard for a classic Thomas hat-trick.

The second game of the day was against Old Loughtonians who we knew were likely to be our toughest opponents. The first half was an evenly matched game, with chances falling for both teams and the Canterbury defenders along with goal keeper Eddie Rowney having to make a number of crucial tackles, clearances and saves. A late goal meant the first half ended 1-0 to Old Loughts. In the second half both teams continued to pressurize each other's goal with both keepers doing well to deny any further goals being scored for much of the half. A string of frustrating umpiring decisions, plus a green card for one of our players, led to Old Loughts scoring two further goals late on in the half with Canterbury unable to capitalise from their chances. Final score 3-0 to Old Loughtonians. Man of the match was Eddie Rowney for keeping us in it for the majority of the game through a number of fine saves.

In the final game of the day against hosts Old Merchant Taylors the Canterbury boys started by attacking the OMT's goal with pace, but a brief lapse in concentration resulted in OMT scoring a breakaway goal 2 minutes into the game. The boys were able to regroup and fought back hard to score 2 goals in the first half. A good team performance in the second half, with great keeping from Eddie, strong defending from the back four and fine passing from our midfield to the forwards meant that Canterbury were able to score a further 3 goals in the second half. Final score 5-1 to Canterbury with 1 goal for Josh Kitson, 2 goals for Thomas Izzard, 1 for Blue Kelleher and Charlie Jain scoring the 5th goal just before the final whistle with a strong reverse strike into the corner of the goal. Man of the match was Blue Kelleher for his work rate, strength & determination on the forward line.

Old Loughts won the tournament with Canterbury coming 2nd.

TEAM: Eddie Rowney, Edward Lampard, Jude Stroud, Callum Conlon, Hugo Corteen Coleman, Charlie Jain, Harry Halle Smith, Sam Ericson, Josh Prebble, Josh Kitson, Michael Sabine, Leo Norwood, Sam Laird, Blue Kelleher, Ethan Aitken, Thomas Izzard (Capt)

U14 BOYS Development Team

In glorious spring sunshine, the U14 Boys Development Team took on Brom Becks in what turned out to be the last match of the season.  It was a game of two halves, although not in the classic sense of the phrase, as we completely dominated both periods of play.  In the first half we created numerous chances and looked really dangerous going forward.  We huffed and we puffed, but we just couldn’t blow their house down.  The Brom Becks keeper was the epitome of the little piggy who had built his house out of bricks, and there was just no way passed.  The short corners routines (which had been devised pre-match by the boys) were creating good opportunities, but that final ball was eluding us. So 0-0 at half time, but the team talk was simple.  Keep playing as we were playing and as soon as we got one, we would get plenty more.

So it proved in the second half.  After a couple of near misses, we were awarded a short corner.  One of the pre-devised routines was executed brilliantly to leave George C some 8 yards out from goal, with only the keeper to beat.  Inspite of the growing anxiety within the team, he kept a cool head and buried it into the goal.  As predicted at half time, this led to the flood gates being opened.  George got his second goal from another quick break into the D and clinical finsh, and this was quickly followed by a goal from Riley.  As the game went on, our fresher legs, thanks to the good squad of player available, started to really tell.  Riley scored his second, thanks in a large part to a superb piece of control in the D from Charlie.  Theo capped another excellent performance with a trademark volleyed goal, and the game finished with a well-deserved goal for the hardworking Charlie.  What a second half!!  The final score of 6-0 didn’t flatter the boys in the slightest.  It was a truly dominate performance on the day, with everyone playing their part.

Throughout the team there were so many good performances to reflect on, from the likes Barney (who was so unlucky not to score) and Isaac up front, to Jonah, Angus, George M and Arthur in the middle.  The defensive unit of Will J, Will A, Thomas and Harvey were so good that Elliot didn’t have to make a save in the entire second half.

However, in a match where  a lot of boys had their best game of the season, my star player was Luca Bywater for his all-round contribution over the whole pitch.   Well done boys on a really good season that just got better and better as the year went on.  Thanks to Andy Hurst for his excellent umpiring and all the parents for their support throughout the season.

Team:  Will Jull, Angus Powell , Riley Holness, Elliot Spencer-Tanner, William Adams, Harvey Godden, Charlie Gotke, Theo Panteli, Arthur Fassum, Jonah Schreiber, George Coombs, Luca Bywater, Thomas Long-Castro, Isaac Culver, Barney Batchelor, George Meineck

U14 GIRLS EH CUP REGIONAL FINALS

Canterbury Vs. Marden
Two well matched teams played out a 2-2 draw.
In the opening minutes of the 1st half a good attack led by Rebecca Hutchings on the right wing resulted in a quick pass to Lily Beer who scored the first goal. Further into the first half Chloe Plumb nearly scored from a short corner injected at pace by Beth Langdale but good goalkeeping kept the ball out of the net. After a period of Canterbury pressure there was another exciting cross from Rebecca but unfortunately our forward line could not connect. A period of Marden possession followed before a defence-opening pass by Grace Patterson led to another chance but with no success.

Into the second half and Canterbury started to make progress on the right wing again with an accurate pass by Lottie McDonnell finding Lily who pushed her second goal into the bottom left corner. As the second half came to a close another strong reverse shot by Chloe was well saved by the Marden keeper and a great run by Felicity Ward on the left led to a short corner but we could not convert.

Canterbury Vs. Surbiton
After a convincing 7-0 win against Marden, Surbiton dominated the 1st half. With Canterbury conceding the 1st goal within just 2mins. Surbiton demonstrated a great breadth of play, putting pressure on all areas of Canterbury’s defence. Georgia Binfield put in a number of great saves, keeping the score down. Surbiton kept the pressure up, allowing Canterbury only short visits to their half. Lottie received a great pass down the right and made a break deep into Surbiton’s half, but their defence was equally as strong as their attack. Their tight control of the ball and quick, strong accurate passes, out shone Canterbury, but we kept on pushing. With a minute to go of the 1st half, Lily won a great battle in mid field and pushed towards their goal, but options were limited and their defence still strong. End of the 1st half, Surbiton 1, Canterbury 0.

It didn’t take long for Surbiton to reapply the pressure in the 2nd half, 40 secs in and Georgia made another great save. Both Alice Hellyar and Hannah Sumner made good interceptions in midfield. 8 mins in we were awarded a short corner, a powerful reverse hit from Chloe, just wide. Surbiton’s consistency was winning the day, they were allowing the ball to do the work, receiving the ball, maximum 2 touches then strong pass. Canterbury didn’t give up and Georgie Hawken, with help from Lorna Forbes, (who seemed to be everywhere in defence), started to work more efficiently, Surbiton’s 2nd goal came 16mins into the second half. Canterbury kept the pressure up, with repeated interceptions, followed by short breaks, which just couldn’t create more opportunities. Georgia made a final
magnificent save, dropping on the ball and allowing a quick clearance. Final score was Surbiton 2 Canterbury 0.

Surbiton were overall winners, Canterbury were placed 2nd, and Teddington were 3rd. Well played girls.

U14 Girls v Sevenoaks Home Counties Development League

CHAMPIONS!

It was a glorious sunny day at Polo Farm, we couldn’t have asked for better playing conditions. The girls knew if they secured a win or a draw they would win the HCGL development league title.

Canterbury started the first half strong with dominant attacking from Poppy, Georgie, Eleni and Elissa and within 10 minutes came the first goal scored by Georgie. Canterbury defended well with brilliant saves from Neave supported by Rebecca, Annie, Grace and Lucy in defence.

The second half was tense and tight with escalating pressure from Sevenoaks; they made several attempts on goal but Canterbury U14 s fought hard. There was great play by our mid field players Annabelle, Abigail, Irmak and Jess, but it was only a matter of time before Sevenoaks eventually scored 5 minutes before the end to level the game. The Canterbury girls were not to be defeated and counter attacked strongly; within the last sixty seconds of the end Irmak made an awesome pass to Georgie who scored her second goal. There were sighs of relief and yells of delight from the home spectators as the final whistle blew. The girls had done it and the team should be very proud, well done!

Final Score: Canterbury 2 Sevenoaks 1.

U16 Girls Home Counties Finals

CHAMPIONS!

It was a lovely sunny day for the Home Counties u16 finals at Reading Hockey Club.

Our first match was against Oxford and we got off to a very confident start with Tilly scoring a brilliant goal early on in the first half. We managed to keep the parents on their toes by keeping the score just 1-0 by half time. Some excellent defending managed to keep the score at 1-0 and meant we secured a place in the final.

In the final we faced Epsom who were caught off guard by a Flora and Tilly combo early on in the first half which made the score 1-0 to us. The game proved exciting and some strong play from both teams meant we were still 1-0 up at half time. After a good talk from Jack at half time, we came out with a fight, but a strong Epsom side managed to score one just before the final whistle. This meant it was 1-1 and we had to go to flicks......

Hannah, Ella, Tilly and Flora all managed to score their flicks confidently and with some really good saves from Ashleigh (who saved 2 out of the 3) it meant that we took the win and we are the Home Counties league Champions!

Amazing performance from all the girls today and a big thank you to Jack and Soak for coaching us and Chris Martin for umpiring. A huge thank you to Jo Martin, our amazingly efficient Manager this season- thank you for all your help and support.

A great way to end the season!
