The Learning Technologies department participated in the 2019 US-China Smart Education Conference held March 18-20, 2019 at UNT. The Denton site was selected to host the fourth annual conference and the first site in the United States. Technology experts, industry leaders, developers and educators from all stages of learning came to examine the role of artificial intelligence and emerging technologies play in the evolution of smart education. Some of the activities included a Virtual Reality Showcase, panel discussions, a gaming tournament featuring drone flights and racing simulators. Promethean's Steve Halliwell was the keynote speaker. Other guest speakers included Liu Dejian is the founder and Chairman of NetDragon, one of China’s leading online game and mobile internet operations companies.
COI's Department of Linguistics, along with the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage hosted a symposium at the Smithsonian Castle in Washington DC. The Symposium, part of the United Nations Year of Indigenous Languages observation. The discussion titled 'Voices in Dangerous Times - Conversations with experts about the loss of language diversity & violence' The conversation in DC stemmed from an NSF-funded conference on 'Language Endangerment and Political Instability.' The goal is to use the overlapping methodology, data, and case studies from Linguistics and Political Science to investigate how government policies, war and other forms of conflict, forced migration, and displacement due to territorial disputes create intersecting causes and consequences of political instability and language endangerment.

Alum Christina H. Gola is the newly elected President of the Texas Library Association. TLA is the largest state library association with 6,000+ members.

Dr. Tai-yi (Fischer) Huang successfully defended her dissertation Title: Essential Competencies for Entry-level Management Positions in the Food and Beverage Industry in Taiwan and Mainland China.

COI Fullbright Scholar, Madison Muniz headed to Greece
Muniz will travel to Greece from September 2019- July 2020. Where she will work as an English Teaching Assistant and assist in teaching English to students in Greece (the grade level has not yet been revealed) and she will strive to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of Greece. After Greece and graduation, Muniz plans to attend business school to obtain an MBA and put her knowledge to use by starting a non-profit focused on strengthening small businesses and community development both locally and internationally.
Muniz will earn her Bachelor of Arts in Linguistics she is on track to graduate Summa Cum Laude this Spring.
