Do you compost? The City of Durham wants to know!

What do you think about food waste and composting? If you take the City of Durham’s new online survey, you could win a $100 Visa gift card just for sharing your thoughts!

Composting is the gathering and mixing of yard and/or food waste in order to convert it over time to crumbly, rich, brown material suitable for building better soils and growing healthier plants. A Waste Characterization Study conducted in 2015 discovered that nearly 30 percent of landfilled material from Durham residents is food and soiled paper, most of which can potentially be composted.

The City’s Solid Waste Management Department is now seeking to better understand the food waste and composting habits of city residents. To help collect this information, an online survey has been created in both English and Spanish and is now available until May 31. Click here to take the survey!

Creek Week Recap

We don't know about you, but this year's Creek Week was probably our most favorite ever!

Altogether, 13 partner organizations and 12 individuals helped to organize a whopping 37 events, including cleanups and recreational/educational activities, from March 16th to the 23rd. Over 300 attendees showed up to help remove 7,740 pounds of trash from local creeks and streams, learn how to protect their local wetlands and wildlife, and enjoy the beauty that nature has to offer.

We'd like to thank each and every person and organization involved, especially the ones who got out into the creeks and streams to help remove harmful waste! If you conducted a cleanup or other event and have photos or metrics you'd like to share, please send them to info@keepdurhambeautiful.org. We will post them along with our other Creek Week event photos on our Flickr page!
