Our April Theme is

Honesty is the best policy, or so we’ve been told. In today’s world, it sometimes seems that Honesty is only a last resort, and that Truth is hard to discern amidst the chatter. The philosopher, Diogenes, is said to wandered Greece with a lantern, looking for an honest man. Come to church this month to hear from our speakers about the meaning and value of Honesty for living in the world.

A wedding band was found in the parking lot.  If you lost a ring please email uucl.office@gmail.com to identify your property.

Announcement

We received the following note from dear member, Bénédicte Gadron.

I am in France. I had to fly urgently because of my mom.
She waited for me.
I was able to spend one more day and night with her.
She died this morning peacefully in my arms.

Bénédicte will be flying back to South Carolina on Monday.
Please keep her and her family in your thoughts and prayers.

4.7.19:  Rev. Dick Hood - "Honesty...Then and Now"

George Washington's story about the cherry tree has stood as a model of honesty for over 200 years.  But today there appears to be an expanded view.  Honesty is not just refusing to lie, but an entire lifestyle.  Thoughts from Australia will help enlighten us.

*********
4.17.19: Rev. Pat Jobe - "Knowing truth is harder than it looks"

Join Rev. Pat Jobe for a look at alternative ways of looking at reality. What is real? How do we honestly know how to see what is real? Is everything real also measurable? That is certainly the materialist view. When Rev. Jobe was last with us, a number of you commented that his was a "very spiritual" sermon. Ready for another walk down that path? Maybe not. We'll see.

Bettman and Halpin –
Saturday, April 13

Bettman & Halpin play original Folk/ Americana. Their concerts combine high- energy upbeat bluegrass/roots inspired compositions, beautiful ballads with soaring vocals and heartfelt lyrics, and groovy feel-good songs that audiences will be singing in their heads for weeks thereafter.  Interspersed between these songs and instrumentals, they tell stories. They have become as known for their storytelling and playful banter as well as for their hooky whole-hearted songwriting and instrumental wizardry. They have been touring as a duo since 2008 and incorporating a trio and quartet since 2013.

Bettman & Halpin have a well-earned reputation for hypnotizing performances filled with irresistible lyrics, transcendent harmonies and roof-raising instrumentals. They have twice been a featured act at the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, KS along with musical heroes Byron Berline, Michael Martin Murphy w/ Pat Flynn, and Tommy Emmanuel. They can also be found performing at various arts centers throughout the US and abroad. Their music creates a fully acoustic, delightfully eclectic sound far greater than the sum of its parts: taking the listener from up-tempo down home fiddlin', to soulful sorrowful ballads, to super hooky folk/pop with catchy melodies and lyrics that will stick with you long after the concert is over. Touring together since 2008, Bettman & Halpin have been recognized in various Regional and National competitions, including:
  • Grand Prize Winners in the So Cal Live Acoustic Music Competition
  • Winners in Southern California’s Topanga Banjo / Fiddle Contest
  • Music Connection’s Top 25 New Music Critiques
  • Their 5 CDs have received national and international radio play along with critical acclaim, reaching the top 10 and top 5 on the National Folk DJ chart and number 1 on The Roots Music Report.
