Happy month of May!!

Seems we have quite a few things to celebrate this month and I am here to remind you because after all, life is all about enjoying it, right?

For instance, we celebrate Mother's Day (great recipe below if you are up for some baking), National Barbecue Month (let the grilling begin!), it's Gifts from the Garden Month too (have you planted your herbs yet?) and the weekend everyone looks forward to - Victoria Day Long Weekend!! All good reasons to host a party wouldn't you say? I can't think of a better way to get in the mood for entertaining in your home.

Here are 8 simple ways to make your home 'Host Ready":

  1. Just Invite People Over
Your house might not be perfect. You might not have enough chairs for everyone, so what. Most people just enjoy being invited to something and they don’t care about what your house looks like.

  2. Don’t Make it So Complicated You Never Do It Again
Don’t stress to get your place sparkling clean, just make it tidy enough to host a party. Invite guests by creating an event on your Facebook page or do it the old fashion way - just call and invite them!!

  3. Food
Use the KISS method (keep it simple silly!). No matter what kind of party you’re hosting (unless it’s a, you know, hunger strike) then the food shouldn't be a big deal. A great way to get everyone involved is by having a Potluck as this gives your guest an opportunity to bring their best dish.

  4. Party Theme
Do a search on Pinterest for party ideas as it has a trillion of them, whether it’s food, decorations, or activities. And then make everything else easy (big activity - easy food. Serious decorations - No activities).

  5. Use Paper Products
Paper cups and dishes makes for easy clean up/recycling during and after the gathering.

  6. A Few Small Details Make a Big Difference
Use cute paper straws, get a bouquet of flowers, or blow some balloons as they are all inexpensive (shop locally), plus it looks like you went to some effort to be a good party host.

  7. Let Other People Help
If people offer to bring extra chairs or a large stack of paper plates or even bring the music, take them up on it. People like to feel useful.

  8. Account for Children
Let your guests know if it is an adult party or if everyone is welcomed, this just makes it comfortable for all.

And most importantly, once people arrive don't forget to simply enjoy the party!

Enjoy the month and Happy Mom's Day!

Here's a delicious dessert recipe for your Mom on her special day!!

Sicilian Lemon and Orange Sweet Bread

Ingredients for the dough:
  • 400g/14oz white flour
  • 7g salt
  • 40g/1½oz caster sugar
  • 10g instant yeast
  • 120ml/4fl oz milk
  • 4 free-range eggs, lightly whisked
  • 100g/3½oz softened unsalted butter, cut into small pieces, plus extra for greasing

For the citrus mixture:
  • 2 lemons, finely grated zest only
  • 1 orange, finely grated zest only
  • 100g/3½oz toasted flaked almonds
  • 100g/3½oz mixed candied peel
  • 100g/3½oz dried cranberries
  • ½ lemon, juice only

For the paste:
  • 2 free-range egg whites
  • 25g/1oz sugar
  • 25g/1oz ground almonds

To top it off
  • 50g/1¾oz flaked almonds
  • caster sugar, to sprinkle

To make the dough, combine the flour, salt, sugar, yeast, milk, eggs and butter in a food mixer fitted with a dough hook.

Mix on a slow speed for three minutes and then set on a medium speed for five minutes, to work the mixture together into a soft dough. If you haven’t got a mixer, mix the dough ingredients together by hand and knead on a lightly floured surface until you get a soft, elastic dough. Tip the dough into a clean bowl, cover and leave to rise for one hour.

For the citrus mixture, combine the citrus zest with the toasted almonds, mixed peel, dried cranberries and lemon juice. Add the citrus mixture to the dough and use your hands to incorporate it into the dough.

Grease a 23cm/9in round deep spring-form cake tin. Shape the dough into a ball and place it into the prepared tin. Cover, or place inside a large plastic bag, and leave to rise for three hours, or until the dough has reached the top of the sides of the tin.

Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas 6 (in a fan oven) and bake the bread on the middle shelf for 20 minutes.

For the topping, in a bowl stir together the egg whites, sugar and ground almonds to make a paste.

After 20 minutes of baking, remove the bread from the oven and spread the paste over the top. Sprinkle with flaked almonds and a little more sugar. Reduce the oven temperature to 180C/350F/Gas 4 and return to the oven for a further 20 minutes. If it is going to brown towards the end of baking then cover it loosely with foil.

Remove from the oven and leave to cool in the tin for 10 minutes; then release the sides of the tin. Remove from the tin and leave to cool completely on a wire rack.

The warm weather is here and fresh produce will be readily available as most Farmer's Markets will open soon and this is when we get to support local businesses.

I do this because I love fresh flowers in my house, the smell of a meal prepared on the barbecue and the taste of fresh fruits and vegetables. I enjoy visiting local markets because I usually find some great items I can easily add in or around my home too.

Get out there and explore your surroundings by visiting the Farmer's Market Ontario website as this is a great reason for a road trip!!

Happy travels!
