"Little darling it's been a long and lonely winter"

As the song goes on to say..."Here comes the sun"  Even with that promise however, an early spring still appears elusive.  But, fingers crossed, if we miss heavy rains and have strong sunshine perhaps ice out is just around the corner and we can avoid a flood situation.

Remember that spring brings its own dangers.  Make sure that your family is aware of the dangers of playing near the water or on the ice.  Take a walk around your property to ensure that any moveable objects are secured against possible flood conditions.  And finally keep up to date with the latest water condition statements from MVCA or the MLA Web Site

If you are a follower of water level trends or just like to know what is happening, Ed Carew's info on the MLA web and the MVCA videos are a place to start.

And this too will come to pass.....
A Cautionary Tale:
(excerpt from FOCA Elert March 2019)

If you are planning some renovations to your lake-home or cottage in 2019 or thinking about building you may want to read this CBC News article, first:   Here's an excerpt:
"The couple filed an insurance claim and an engineering company was brought in to assess the damage. It applied to the Township of Scugog for a permit to do repairs, but was denied because roughly two-thirds of the house was built without proper permits."

MLA Seeks Nominations to the Board of Directors.

We are looking for MLA members, or would be members, who enjoy the quality of life we have here and are interested working with others to maintain and enhance it. Interested individuals should be willing to engage with the lake community to promote the mission of the MLA and be prepared to take a leadership role of a subcommittee or special project that is of personal interest to them and of value to the wider MLA membership.  READ MORE

If you or someone you know might be interested please contact either Dave Duncan, Richard Teahen or Anne Gourlay-Langlois for more information.

Bird Collisions

While many of us  encourage the bird life around our homes and cottages with feeders and flowering plants it is important to note that we may also be putting them in danger.  Our windows that reflect the scenery around us are often invisible to birds.

Safe Wings Ottawa is a program of the Ottawa Field-Naturalists’ Club to reduce bird mortality from window collisions through research, prevention and rescue.  You can check out their residential strategies if you wish to learn more about making your home bird friendly.

A Big Thank You to Our Volunteers

On the occasion of National Volunteer week, 7-13 April, the MLA sends out a big thank you to all the volunteers who have given generously of their time. Whether you have been out on the water, laying buoys, counting loons, sampling water or serving on advisory committees and other duties you are all important to the success of the MLA in making lake life enjoyable for all.

If you are interested in volunteering in the future we have many opportunities coming up this summer so stay tuned or visit us at our web site.

Have you ever wondered?

It may be something that we never want to face but if the question ever arises here are some do's and don’ts surrounding scattering the ashes of our loved ones.

Did you know?

In late February 2019,  Canadian Parliament passed a new act: the Wrecked, Abandoned, or Hazardous Vessels Act (C-64). Details are here. The Act makes it illegal to abandon a vessel or allow it to become a wreck.  Read more on the subject from an article in Cottage Life .
