January - March Newsletter

On behalf of our 15 grassroots organizations across six states, thank you for your continued support in the fight for clean water, healthy land, and a just transition in our Region. We appreciate you! 
Spring has officially arrived and the Alliance for Appalachia is welcoming the new year and the new season with our members.  We are excited to tell you what we have been working on and share some highlights and upcoming events. Please contact us for any further information. 
Grassroots Water Monitoring & Citizens Enforcement
This January, 12 Alliance members and friends came from 5 states to teach each other and learn how to identify water quality violations and how they can enforce regulations.

New Economy & Land Team

Members gathered to gain a shared understanding of how land ownership functions and to identify existing campaigns for land ownership reform. Many of the team members are also working directly with the Appalachian Land Study. Read more...

Where is Congress on RECLAIM and Black Lung?

We need fewer words and more action. Where are the elected congressional leaders in Appalachia and why are they not doing everything they can to hold the industry accountable to those impacted by the downturn of the coal industry? Read More...

Organizational Capacity 

We have been participating in a capacity building program that supports organizational development for grassroots organizations. In January, we co-hosted a training focused on individual giving. 
We now have the ability to accept donations through Facebook. Would you be willing to start a Facebook campaign to support the Alliance?

UPCOMING EVENTS
  • March 28: House Natural Resources Committee hearing on the RECLAIM Act-- tune in here or engage on Facebook Live the day of the hearing.
  • March 29:  Attend a public hearing in Frankfort, KY to show your support for the locals in Harlan County, KY who have petitioned to designate Benham and Lynch as unsuitable for all types of surface coal mining operations.
  • March 31: Last day to apply for the RECLAIM Field Fund, which is providing mini-grants to grassroots groups working on local campaigns in connection with passing the RECLAIM Act.
  • July 18 - 21: Save the date for the annual STAY Summer Institute in Marion, VA
