APRIL 2019
Dr. Bing Wang was invited to participate as an Expert in the Joint FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) and WHO (The World Health Organization) Expert Consultation Meeting on Microbial Risk Assessment, Rome Italy, March 11-15, 2019. This meeting was convened following the request of Codex Alimentarius Committee on Food Hygiene for FAO and WHO, to develop a single, updated guideline to provide practical guidance and a structured framework for carrying out risk assessment of microbiological hazards in foods at a national level. The primary audience for this guideline is the global community of scientists and risk assessors, both experienced and inexperienced, in risk assessment, and the risk managers they serve.
Dr. Bob Hutkins was an invited speaker at the Food Forum 2019 meeting in Washington D.C.  Held at the prestigious National Academy of Sciences, the Food Forum brings together leaders from academia, industry, and government.  The theme for the Spring meeting was “Beyond Traditional Nutrition” and included topics on probiotics, prebiotics, fermented foods, functional and bioactive foods, and nutrition policy.  Prof. Hutkins spoke on fermented foods and the microbiota.
Food Science and Technology juniors Chloe Christensen and Justin Tran are the 2018-2019 recpients of the Edward J. Cornish Scholarship, the oldest scholarship at the University of Nebraska Foundation. Annual income from the endowment provides one or two scholarships a year to students studying in the UNL College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources. You can read more about Chloe and Justin at https://go.unl.edu/iqb0
Dr. Bismarck Martinez has joined The Food Processing Center as a Food Safety Specialist at the rank of Assistant Professor of Scholarly Service. As part of his duties, Bismarck will be developing a high-impact outreach and research program assisting Nebraska food manufacturers, manufacturers in other states and service providers in MEP centers of other states to prepare for compliance and to implement requirements of the Food Safety Modernization Act. You can contact Dr. Martinez at bmartineztellez2@unl.edu.
Dr. Andreia Bianchini and the Feed the Future Lab for the Reduction of Post Harvest Loss (PHIL) collaborated with Scientific Animators without Borders (SAWBO) to create an animation that explains postharvest loss prevention techniques in a simple and direct way. You can view the video on YouTube at https://go.unl.edu/mpns.

Near Miss... or Near Hit?

EHS and the Chancellor's University Safety Committee encourages reporting of near-miss/close call incidents and potentially unsafe conditions (e.g., unsafe acts, equipment defect, etc.) in the workplace so that contributing factors can be identified and abated before they result in personal injury/illness or property damage.

A near miss is an incident where no property was damaged and no personal injury sustained, but where, given a slight shift in time or position, damage and/or injury or illness easily could have occurred. It can be thought of as a "close call."  Looking at the situation from another viewpoint…it can be thought of as a “near hit!”

By reporting these circumstances, you are contributing to a safer and healthier campus environment. Information reported is shared throughout the University for educational/awareness purposes; specific identifying information (e.g., names, departments, etc.) is redacted. We appreciate your participation and assure you that there is no risk of repercussions for reporting a situation or hazard.

To support this effort, a “Near Miss/Close Call Incident Reporting Form,” https://ehs.unl.edu/near-missclose-call-incident-reporting-form) is available through the EHS website. EHS has developed business-card size handouts containing the URL to report for ease of sharing this information others in your work area.  Please consider requesting a number of these Near Miss/Close Call reporting informational cards.  To request any quantity of these business-card size handouts contact EHS at 402-472-4925 or ehs@unl.edu.
