Savina Yannatou by Regina Schmeken

Ionic

Sat 23rd & Sun 24th March
Ye Olde Mitre, London

Last year, as some of you will recall, I played several shows with Sefiroth at Marchland, a season of performances from the edges and in-between places of Europe (you can watch videos from those shows here). I'm delighted to be returning to Marchland for this year's festival, which takes over one of London's most historic pubs for a weekend of intimate performances exploring what it means to be European today.

Ionic is a new dance theatre piece from Anglo-French company Théâtre Volière based on the life and poetry of Constantine Cavafy. My settings of Cavafy's poems will be sung by the amazing Savina Yannatou, whose recordings of songs from all over the world have been a huge inspiration for me. Savina is accompanied by classical guitarist Nikos Baroutsakis and myself on electric guitar, with choreography by Janacek Wood.

Ionic is part of the "Once And Future Europe" session, which includes two other performances: Lyonesse (in which the land that sank beneath the waves between Cornwall and Brittany is raised up again) and The Capital of Europe, a sound installation evoking a utopian city on the Rhine.

Performances are at the following times:

Saturday: 11:30 and 17:00*
Sunday: 19:50

One Wall Of Me

Kasia Witek's contemporary dance work about the interconnectivity of everything and what happens when we perceive it, featuring a score I devised with cellist Alice Purton, will be performed as part of Making an EXIT, a marathon art event including performances, interventions and two very special breakfasts framing twenty-four hours of history in the making.

Save Late Junction!

Those of you in the UK may have heard about BBC Radio 3's plans to cut airtime for its unique Late Junction programme. LJ is the key programme for adventurous, exploratory music (just take a look at recent episodes to get a taste for the range of stuff they play, not to mention the inspired live sessions they put together). Its late-night playlists have introduced me to tracks, artists and even whole kinds of music I doubt I'd have come across elsewhere, and it's one of the few major radio shows on which my own music (with Sefiroth, Future Currents etc) has been played, thanks to open-eared presenters like Fiona Talkington, Verity Sharp and Max Reinhardt.

Diminishing this vital cultural space, presumably with a view to cancelling it further down the line, would be a travesty for both listeners and artists. Furthermore, it goes against Radio 3's own stated aim "to continue to offer a rich mix of music". A petition has been started asking the BBC to reconsider this terrible decision; if you value the few outlets we have for non-mainstream culture, please sign it:

Until next time...
