Can a Capstone Help Your Organization?
RIT’s Executive MBA Capstone program has been helping companies solve problems and tackle new opportunities since 1992. From business process reviews to diversification initiatives and market opportunity analyses, EMBA student teams have helped local, national, and international firms make data driven decisions to improve company performance or chart new strategic directions.
Projects are completed over 4-to-5 months, and generally include a strong primary market research component such as customer, prospect, or employee surveys, focus groups, and individual interviews. Capstone submissions are reviewed for rigor and relevance, and teams then select from among the qualified projects. There is no charge for capstone projects.
How can your company benefit from a capstone project?

LR Recap- Justice for All Day
News anchor, Norma Holland joined the LR Justice Day last month, where she moderated a panel discussion on Rochester’s proposed Police Accountability Board. Panelists included Jennifer Sommers, Deputy Attorney General, Gregory Bello, Rochester Police Department Internal Affairs, Mike Mazzeo, President of the Rochester Locust Club, and Iman Abid, Executive Director of the Genesee Valley Chapter of the ACLU. Panelists discussed the practices for handling a police involved incident and the proposed police accountably board efforts currently being discussed before Rochester City Council. It was a dynamic discussion for the LR2019 class.
Speaking for the police union, Mazzeo noted that police had not been included in the developed proposal for a review board. Iman Abid explained the long term complexities and the ACLU’s concerns about the confidential closed process internal police investigations. Bello clarified the complex role of Internal Affairs and discussed the force’s policy of notifying victims or complainants about the results of investigations of officers. Sommers explained that that in situations where a citizen dies as a result of police action, the case is automatically referred to the Attorney General’s office to help alleviate local conflicts of interest with elected offices like the District Attorney’s office. Class members questioned whether there were any models across the country that were working. But for Rochester, the panel indicated the topic was still unsettled.
Additional speakers for the day included Rochester City Court Judge Steve Miller, District Attorney Sandra Doorley, Public Defender Tim Donaher, Monroe County Undersheriff Korey Brown, and Deputy Chief LaRon Singletary who about trends they’re seeing in New York State justice system reforms. Commander Fabian Rivera discussed community policing in the 21st Century. New 911 Director, Michael Cerretto opened the morning. Lentory Johnson shared her story about the death of her son because of Gun Violence. And finally, class members discussed the school to prison pipeline with Rochester City School Commissioner Natalie Sheppard, Hillside Residence Director, David Fluellen, and RPD Office Moses Robinson
.
Leading up to the day’s discussions class members had the opportunity to visit the Hall of Justice, meet judges, and observe courts in session. They toured the Monroe County Public Safety Training Facility, participated in 911 sit-alongs, and ride alongs with the RPD and Sherriff’s office.
Thanks to our Justice for All Day Alumni Planning Team

LR Welcomes Flower City AmeriCorps
New for 2019, Leadership Rochester is happy to partner with Flower City Americorp program hosted by the City of Rochester. In January, LR welcomed our new Americorp member Carolyn Scott who will be with our organization for the year. We asked Carolyn to share a bit about herself so you can get to know her.
Here's what Carolyn has to say...
I am a member of Flower City AmeriCorps. AmeriCorps helps communities and people who want to make a difference getting things done. It took me a while to decide to join AmeriCorps. My daughter Vanessa completed her year in AmeriCorps last year. She loved it. It’s kind of fits what I wanted to do. I wanted to volunteer and be able to work also. I was volunteering with the Mental Health Associations’ program at the Creative Wellness Opportunities center. I facilitated workshops. Everything from embroidery to painting. I have always been an artist. Creative Wellness has an art studio and a couple of galleries. It helped me get back to my art. I have chronic depression. I completed my bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from Nazareth College in 2004. It took fifteen years, but I got it.
Education is very important to me and my family. My family is from a small town near Mobile, Alabama. It’s called Bayou La Batre. It’s Creole country with Gumbo and Jambalaya. I really miss it. My Moms’ is the best you know. I moved to Rochester with my two daughters Meredith and Vanessa over twenty years ago. My daughters are grown, and I have a seven years old granddaughter, Natalia. If it was not for my children, I don’t think I would still be here. They have been the reasons for me to keep trying. I like to read. I have one cat named Skylar. I have been working at Leadership Rochester for over a month. It has taken a little time to get use to the computer. I’m amazed at all the Gwen can do. I enjoy learning all the new stuff. I appreciate Gwen’s patience and understanding, so all is well here, and I look forward to this year 2019 at Leadership Rochester.
