Highlights from The Carpentries Community Calendar
Community Discussions
The next Themed Discussion Session will be led by Damien Irving on 2 April at 12:00 noon AEDT (check your local time here). Damien is the Regional Coordinator for the Australian Carpentries community. Take this opportunity to find out what the Australian community has been working on and how you can get involved. To attend this or other upcoming Community Discussions, add your name on the etherpad directly.
Community News
The Carpentries Team has an internal database that they use for tracking all Carpentries related activities. It is used for publishing Instructors, Trainers and Maintainers pages, as well as to recruit Instructors for upcoming workshops. Visit https://amy.carpentries.org and log in with GitHub to make sure your information is up to date. Drop an email to team@carpentries.org if you have any trouble doing so.
Committee and Task Force News
CarpentryCon TaskForce
The TaskForce has now opened the calls for CarpentryCon 2020 venue and theme. On 19 March, the members of TaskForce invited suggestions and bids from the community at the #CarpentriesConversations of Community Discussion series. Find more information in this blog post by Malvika Sharan.
Instructor Development Committee
The Carpentries is looking to onboard the next Instructor Development Committee (IDC) leaders. Are you interested in learning about roles and responsibilities of IDC leaders? Do you think you can be the next IDC leader? Attend one of the upcoming Instructor Development meetings to learn more. The calls are on 3 April at 16:00 UTC (check your time) and 23:00 UTC (check your time). Sign-up on the instructor-development Etherpad.
Trainers Team
The topic of the Trainers Meetings on 7 March was Instructor Badges. The general consensus at the discussion was that a single Carpentries Instructor badge would be sufficient and can avoid confusion of using multiple badges. However, several ideas came up about what to do with lesson-program-specific badges. The Carpentries core team will explore this topic further and consult with the broader community when they are able to tackle this issue.
Maintainers Team
Lesson releases are opportunities for The Carpentries to give credit to everyone in the community who contributes to the lesson development. Particularly, it highlights the work of Maintainers, who respond to questions, act on GitHub issues and pull requests, and do so much more to keep these lessons up to date! In June 2019, Maintainers will have an opportunity to do coordinated lesson releases. Stay tuned to see which of our lessons have had major updates in the last months.
Library Carpentry
On 24-25 June, an instructor training for librarians will take place at University College Dublin. Library Carpentry and The Carpentries have teamed up with the Association of European Research Libraries (LIBER) and LIR HEAnet User Group for Libraries to host training events. Training will take place in association with the 48th LIBER Annual Conference. This was a direct result of a LIBER community survey report that pointed the importance of Library Carpentry in growing the capacity of Carpentries instructors in European libraries (more information).
What you may have missed on the blog and mailing lists
The Carpentries is hiring a Regional Coordinator to support its community in Africa. The Topicbox Discuss list was particularly active last week. Community members have been discussing concurrent, multi-site delivery of workshops using Zoom, teaching intro to data science at the high school level and developing a Biostatistics course. Christina Koch is welcoming applications for the Open Science Grid User School 2019 and the Carpentries team invites community feedback and suggestion on its communications. Right before the conference, Tracy and Kari will run a two-day Carpentries Instructors training from May 6 to 7.

Attend the CarpentryConnect Manchester from 25 to 27 June 2019 to exchange skills and resources with the community members from all around the world under the theme "Training Communities: Challenges & Opportunities in Europe".
Biodiversity_next
The Carpentries is co-organizing a symposium at the Biodiversity_next conference in the Netherlands on October 22-25 2019. Under the theme "Developing a Data-Literate Workforce in Biodiversity Science", the symposium call for the abstract submissions is open until March 22.
