Painting at the Library

We’ve partnered with the Greenup County Extension Office in offering “spring scene” painting classes. Reserve your spot for Sunday, April 7 at our Greenup Branch for either the 1:30 pm or 4 pm time by pre-paying $10 to the Downtown Greenup Library. There is also a class available Saturday, April 13 at 11:30 am at McKell Branch. Please pre-pay $10 to reserve your spot for this class at the McKell Branch.

“Painting with Pastries” will be led by library staff artist Lorna at the Flatwoods Branch. The class will have two sessions on Tuesday, April 9 at 1:30 pm and 5:30 pm. Pre-pay $10 at the Flatwoods Branch to reserve your spot. This class will be painting a beautiful rose.

All-County Spring Art Show

Visit the Greenup Branch the week of April 30-May 5 to see the All-County Student Art Show. Come and enjoy the amazing artwork happening in our local school programs! Winners will receive the Lucy Wood Memorial Art Award, named after Lucy Rayburn Wood, one of the original board members of the Greenup County Library, who was instrumental in its establishment. Students participating are all ages, from Greenup County, Raceland-Worthington, Russell, and Greenup County home-schoolers.

Book Stickers

We’re making it easier to find the next book on your list at the Flatwoods Branch. It can be difficult to decipher which book comes next in a series when it comes to different authors. We’re are in the process of adding color coordinated stickers pertaining to certain series with their number order. Some of the authors include James Patterson, Nora Roberts, Debbie Macomber, Clive Clusser, and Lee Child, with many more to follow. Certain authors that have been weeded at the Flatwoods Branch are still available at our other branches.

April Library Bingo!

Pick up a bingo card at the desk of any branch. Cover all of your card, return the card for a prize! The bingo cards will take you all over the library to make sure you see what your local library has to offer.

Exceptional Family KY Magazine

Make sure to pick up a copy of Exceptional Family KY magazine, a great resource provided by the Commonwealth Council on Developmental Disabilities. This magazine contains issues for advocacy, employment, recreation, as well as a resource list for agency programs, camps, and activities. Copies are available at all branches.

Among her many accomplishments, Dorothy Kendall Griffith was a driving force and pioneer in the establishment of library service in Greenup County.

Through her career she served on state committees and received Kentucky’s Outstanding Librarian of the year award in 1981. The establishment of a first-rate local history and genealogy room was one of her personal goals. Knowledgeable and prideful of her roots and those of other families in the history of Greenup county, she worked diligently to acquire and house a stellar and unique collection of records.

“Dorothy has been an inspiration for many facets of my life,” said Sharon Haines, director of Greenup County Public Library. “The importance of family and keeping them close, the way to handle work and kids, her love of people and her fun-loving spirit and sense of humor, and her high expectations of others have guided me through 50 years of my life. I am so blessed to have known and loved her.”
