No Path to Have a Relationship of Mutual Trust and Respect

To quote Alanis Morissette, isn't it ironic, that the day “The 6 Relationships of Highly Effective Organizations” lands on Amazon, the Clerk of the Pricy Council Office retires over a breakdown of relationships.

Mr. Wernick played a key role in seeking to help SNC-Lavalin avoid criminal prosecution.  He had faced opposition demands to step down after giving what many considered blunt and opinionated testimony for a public servant before the House justice committee, where he defended the government’s handling of the dispute with Ms. Wilson-Raybould.

In his March 18th resignation letter Mr. Wernick notes, “Recent events have led me to conclude that I cannot continue as Clerk of the Privy Council and Secretary to Cabinet during the upcoming election campaign.” He added, “It is now apparent that there is no path for me to have a relationship of mutual trust and respect with the opposition parties.’”

In the March 7th edition of Communications Issues, it was noted that “Trust is the foundation of all relationships whether they are personal or professional.” The “Erosion of Trust” issue was written in response to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s March 7th press conference where he stated he should have been aware of an “erosion of trust” between his office and former Minister of Justice Jody Wilson-Raybould over the SNC-Lavalin controversy. “Over the past months, there was an erosion of trust between my office and specifically my former principal secretary and the former Minister of Justice and Attorney General,” Trudeau said. “I was not aware of that erosion of trust. As Prime Minister and leader of the Federal Ministry, I should have been.”

Prime Minister Trudeaus’ comments highlight the importance of relationships (in which trust is the foundation) and the monitoring of those relationships. Trudeau has framed the SNC Lavalin affair as a learning opportunity. He noted that people were not being heard. In his March 7th remarks, Trudeau stated that, “dialogue is critical on matters of justice.” The reality is, is that dialogue is critical on all matters. Let’s hope that this was a learning experience not only for Mr. Trudeau and his government, but all governments at all levels, as well as with private and not-for-profit sector organizations.

Over the past thirty-five years as a business owner, consultant, communications instructor, media junky, politician, community activist and volunteer, Dale Harley has refined the Relationship Centered Model. In his new book, The Six Relationships of Highly Effective Organizations, he outlines how to harness and integrate an organizations’ client, media, investor, employee, community and government relations to maximize the long-term success and growth of organizations.

In his book, Harley answers the question; “What is it that separates great organizations from average organizations?”  He concludes that the simple answer is “relationships”, or more specifically, how organizations manage their relationships with their key stakeholders and that and organization is only as strong as your weakest relationship. This informative and easy to read book examines these six key relationships that every organization (whether a private sector firm, public institution, or not for profit organization) must focus on to ensure their survival.
