MAIN STREET TOURIST NEWSLETTER
Hello my friends!!

Happy Friday!! I hope everyone is having a great week!

This week's newsletter is a bit longer than most. There were quite a few pieces of news that came out this week that I think are important for you to know.

So, let's jump right in and get to all the details!
NEWS & HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE WEEK
Authentic Crêperie Coming to the France Pavilion at Epcot
This is très magnifique!!! I'm so excited for this all-new dining location coming to Epcot! As part of Epcot's transformation over the next several years, a new table service/quick service crêpe restaurant is opening in a brand new location in the France Pavilion.

The new crêperie will feature the cuisine of celebrity chef Jérôme Bocuse, the mastermind behind the pavilion’s Chefs de France brasserie and its celebration of gourmet cuisine, Monsieur Paul. The menu will be inspired by the Brittany region of France offering Guests savory crepes called galettes and sweet crepes.

An opening date has not yet been confirmed. Stay tuned for more updates as they released!

"Disney's Walk Around the World" Bricks Being Retired

With so many improvements coming to the entrances to all four Walt Disney World theme parks, it comes with no surprise that the Disney’s Walk Around the World bricks creating a path leading into the Magic Kingdom will soon be retired.

While I admit, I never had a brick on this walkway, it has become part of the magic and tradition seeing those bricks as I walk into the park. This path represents so many memories for so many Guests, past and present. While I’m excited for all the changes, it will be sad to see these go.

These bricks were sold with the commitment that they would be displayed until 2011. It is now long past that timeframe. Since the bricks were not designed to be removed individually, they will not be available to take home. Instead, guests who sponsored a brick may purchase a commemorative version between now and Aug. 31, 2019, or while supplies last.

Disney's Blockbuster Deal with Fox is Final!
What Does it Mean?
It's official! On Wednesday March 20, 2019, Disney's acquisition of 21st Century Fox became effective. What does this mean for the Walt Disney Company?
  • Access to a slew of content and entertainment options to meet growing consumer demand
  • Increase the company's international footprint
  • Expand its direct-to-consumer offerings (includes ESPN+ for sports fans, Disney+ streaming video-on-demand service launching in late 2019; and Disney and 21st Century Fox’s combined ownership stake in Hulu)
In a note to Disney employees, Iger writes "As you know, Disney has never been short on ambition.  We’ve never been satisfied with the status quo, and our vision for this transformative era is our boldest yet.  We are rapidly transforming our company to take full advantage of evolving consumer trends and emerging technology in order to thrive in this new and exciting time."

Here are some key takeaways from Wednesday's $71 billion deal:
  • According to Disney CEO Bob Iger, there will be challenges ahead as the two companies integrate
  • Expected layoffs affecting both sides to eliminate duplicate staff between Disney and Fox
  • Disney gains key content for its upcoming streaming service, Disney+, through the acquisition
The acquisition includes 21st Century Fox’s renowned film production businesses, including Twentieth Century Fox, Fox Searchlight Pictures, Fox 2000 Pictures, Fox Family and Fox Animation; Fox’s television creative units, Twentieth Century Fox Television, FX Productions and Fox21; FX Networks; National Geographic Partners; Fox Networks Group International; Star India; and Fox’s interests in Hulu, Tata Sky and Endemol Shine Group. Disney and 21st Century Fox entered into a consent decree with the U.S. Department of Justice last year under which Disney will divest 21st Century Fox’s Regional Sports Networks.

This is an unprecedented deal and with it comes endless opportunities and possibilities. It will be interesting to see how the Walt Disney Company positions all of these businesses and integrates them within the current portfolio.

Here is the full memo to Walt Disney employees from Bob Iger -

I’m proud to announce the acquisition is complete and 21st Century Fox is now part of The Walt Disney Company.  I’d like to welcome our new colleagues, and thank employees on both sides of the deal for your patience and perseverance as we worked through the lengthy acquisition and regulatory process.

As you know, Disney has never been short on ambition.  We’ve never been satisfied with the status quo, and our vision for this transformative era is our boldest yet.  We are rapidly transforming our company to take full advantage of evolving consumer trends and emerging technology in order to thrive in this new and exciting time.

Our acquisition of 21st Century Fox was driven by our strong belief that the addition of these great businesses, brands, franchises and talent will allow us to move faster, reach farther and aim higher – especially when it comes to building direct connections with consumers.

I wish I could tell you that the hardest part is behind us; that closing the deal was the finish line, rather than just the next milestone.  What lies ahead is the challenging work of uniting our businesses to create a dynamic, global entertainment company with the content, the platforms, and the reach to deliver industry-defining experiences that will engage consumers around the world for generations to come.

We’ve spent the last year exploring the new opportunities and synergies generated by bringing our two legendary companies together.  Leaders across both organizations have worked closely together to understand how to best unlock this potential and unleash innovation and creativity to generate long-term growth.  We’re confident in our integration strategy and in our ability to execute it effectively; and we’re inspired and energized by the new possibilities.

Our integration process will be an evolution, with some businesses impacted more than others.  We’ve made many critical decisions already, but some areas still require further evaluation. We may not have answers to all of your questions at this moment, but we understand how vital information is, and we’re committed to moving as quickly as possible to provide clarity regarding how your role may be impacted.

Having been on both sides of numerous acquisitions during my career, I have a deep appreciation for how this one impacts everyone involved, on both a personal and professional level.  I understand the challenges, and I ask for your continued patience in the days to come as we combine this collection of great assets to create the world’s premier entertainment company.

-Bob
