DBS NEWSLETTER

22nd March 2019

From Mark McVeigh, Principal

Dear DBS Parents,

In Assembly today, I was able to witness some of the amazing talents of the DBS students. Mr Plowright’s Y5 Dugong class gave a thought-provoking presentation on bravery, teamwork and confidence. I was then given the opportunity to present awards to individual students for the Accelerated Reader Programme, Duke of York IDEA and Book Week essay competition.

In our Open Day on Wednesday, focusing on Pre-EY (the Mini Dragons) and EY, we watched wonderful performances: Jie Jie’s piano playing, Po’s reading and Yuan Yuan’s speech. It was heartening to see such evidence of the progress that our students are making.

The DBS ‘Pi Day’, organised by Mrs Higgins, was a terrific success, and you can read about it later in the Newsletter, including gifted students able to recite pi to an enormous number of decimal places. The connection between ‘pi’ and ‘pie’ added a strangely popular culinary dimension.

The DBS U11 footballers and swimmers performed brilliantly against RBIS this week, winning both encounters by an impressive margin. Also, congratulations go to Nammon in Year 7, who was 10th overall, with over 30,000 participants, in the Korat International Powdurance Marathon 2019.

It was good to see some of you at Parent Time today, and at the DBS Entrepreneur Series presentation, by Mr Don Charnsupharindr, Director and Retail Banking Head at Citibank Thailand. There was a most productive Friends of DBS Committee meeting this week, and we are discussing the best way for the minutes to be communicated to the whole parental body.

I would like to enlist your support in a few areas, please:

  • It is not appropriate for parents to be in the Dining Room in the afternoon. This is a safeguarding concern.
  • Parental dress on the DBS campus should be modest.
  • It would be really helpful if you would speak to your children in English on campus, if you are able to.
  • It is a safety issue to let children play on the campus after school, without parental supervision.

Lisa joins me in sending you our very best wishes,

Mark McVeigh

On Friday 29th March, we will be hosting the final of our first ever Denla's Got Talent! Four acts from each House will take to the stage for an afternoon of dance, music, song, comedy and acting, in what promises to be a dazzling display of the wealth of talent throughout the school. Please note that due to space restrictions in the DBS Theatre, only parents and families of the finalists are able to attend. Photos and videos will be available after the event for those who are interested. We hope this will not be too much of a disappointment.
U11 Football v RBIS

A football team comprising of players from the Swim Squad, travelled to RBIS on Tuesday for a fixture prior to a swim gala. DBS started strongly and with Charlie playing as striker, raced to a 2 goal lead. DBS continued to dominate throughout and with Pan busy in midfield, the lead was doubled before half time, through goals from Freddie and Nacho.

The second half began in the same way as the first had ended, with DBS very much on top. Any attacks that RBIS could amass were soon stopped by the solid defending of Toong Toong and Thomas, ensuring Ethan, making his debut in goal, kept a clean sheet. Toong Toong then appeared in the opposition box to score, before both Charlie and Nacho completed their hat tricks.

A fantastic performance by the DBS U11 footballers and another victory.

RBIS 0 v 8 DBS
DBS Dragons Swim Team v RBIS

It was a dominant afternoon in the pool for the DBS Dragons who secured numerous first place positions to win the Swimming Gala at RBIS. There were lots of outstanding performances at the gala, and congratulations go to Pinky, who achieved personal best times in all of her strokes. Well done to all swimmers that competed!
DBS launched their very first Pi Day on Thursday. It was an eventful day filled with exciting activities and competitions. The children in EY linked Pi Day with their learning of circles and curved shapes. For the children in Pre Prep, they brought their learning of fractions to life with some hands-on pizza making - also making links with circles.

The Prep students were whipped up into a frenzy of activities, during the afternoon, creating Pi paper chains and beaded necklaces to represent the digits if Pi. The students amazed the teachers by reciting an outstanding number of digits of Pi in their year group competitions. We saw Pi written with 31 digits, to an astonishing 112!. A huge well done to all the participants.

The day came to a close with a Pi Party - a great way to celebrate the extraordinary fun we have had leaning the digits of Pi combined with the deliciousness of actual pies.
The children in the EY1 Jellyfish Class have been looking at 2D shapes this week, focusing on circles to celebrate Pi Day. We used small circles to learn about letter formation, in particular working on the letters within our names.
In Y1, we have been learning about fractions. We found half by sharing amounts onto two equal parts of our pizzas. We had a fantastic time making real pizzas for our snack. We tried to put equal amounts of pizza topping onto each pizza quarter.
This week, Y5 took part in a mini Science fair, which they have been preparing for in their Science lessons over the past few weeks. They put on their own personalised lab coats, which they pre made at home and then participated in a range of exciting experiments. This included an 'egg drop' challenge, using tennis balls rather than eggs, with a very high success rate! Our budding Y5 scientists were fantastic throughout, and had lots of fun!
The Y5 Dugong class assembly this morning, taught us all about the importance of bravery, team work and confidence. The children defined each word whilst inviting the audience to participate in some challenges. The form worked hard to create an awesome performance in such a short space of time and should be proud of the bravery, team work and confidence shown in their performances! Well done!
In Y6 Humanities, we have been learning about Viking homes and roles within the Viking family. The students took part in an entertaining hot-seating activity, where they took on the role of different Vikings through Drama. It turned into a long game of 'Guess Who?', which certainly tested their questioning abilities.
In Geography, the Y8's became police detectives. They were given a case file which they had to try to solve in a lesson objects had been drifting on to the beaches in the South of  England. After sifting through the evidence including witness accounts and coastguard reports, they had a better idea of the mysterious cause. All evidence pointed to the natural phenomenon of Longshore drift!

Google Classroom Guardian (Parent) Email Summaries - now open Y5-8

Parents of students in Y5-8 can now subscribe to a daily or weekly email summary of posts in Google Classroom. This will strengthen understanding about work being studied and will be a way to communicate HOMEWORK requirements. Invitations were sent out by email earlier this week so please check your spam as it will have come from a new email address but you should see reference to 'Mel Hall (Classroom)' in the address and 'Receive Google Classroom email summaries for ...' in the subject.

If you would prefer a different email address (or an additional email address) please let me know as soon as possible. You will, however, need a Gmail Account to access daily emails (you could set up mail forwarding to your preferred account) but any email account can access a weekly report. All emails are sent out about 4:30pm.

Please do not sign in to the Google Classroom App or website as this may confuse the distinction between parent email addresses and student email addresses.
