NOTEWORTHY NEWS.

 

MARCH 27th: SAT/PSAT

The Connecticut SAT School Day is March 27, 2019 for all students enrolled in Grade 11. On this date juniors will take the SAT and freshmen will take the PSAT 8/9. The testing period will start at 7:30 a.m. and end at approximately 11:15 a.m., after which students will begin the an abbreviated school day. The regular bus schedule will be in effect for freshmen and juniors. Sophomores and seniors will be transported by bus separately, approximately four hours and fifteen minutes later than their usual pick-up time.

Come see the Senior Show, written and directed by RJ Giannicchi on Friday, March 29 at 7:30 p.m. Support the Senior Class and enjoy a night of jokes, skits, and guest performances from Miles Trainor and Kevin Keating. Connecticut PTA 2019 REFLECTIONS AWARDS  

The Connecticut PTA has announced the winners of the 2019 Reflections competition, “Heroes Around Me”. Joel Barlow PTSA is proud to congratulate Eva Boyce and Lily Anderson on their achievements at the state level! Eva took second place for her Photography work, “Remembrance” and Lily took second place for her Dance interpretation, “Thunder”. Both students will be honored at the CT PTA Reflections Awards Ceremony on Wednesday, May 15that Fairfield Ludlowe High School.

School Counselors are looking forward to the annual meetings with juniors and their parents. Letters notifying you of the appointment date and time will be mailed throughout the second half of the school year. All appointments occur during your child's study hall.


ADVANCED PLACEMENT (AP) EXAMS

May 6th–10th and May 13th–17th, 2019
The 2019 Advanced Placement examinations will be administered during the weeks of May 6th-10th and May 13th-17th, 2019. Students enrolled in AP classes at Barlow are required to take the AP examinations. Each Advanced Placement exam is $94. Checks were due on February 1, 2019. If you have any questions, contact your student’s school counselor or Ms. Desmarais, Assistant Principal & Test Coordinator. You may also visit the College Board website to access specific information about each exam.

 

JBHS STUDENT ACTIVITY PARTICIPATION FEES

A participation fee is required for students participating in certain extra-curricular activities. These funds are used to offset stipends for coaches and advisors. Click here to download the form. The annual $30 fee is only paid once per year per student, not per activity.

St. Patrick’s Church Youth Group is conducting a mission for a Youth Sports Clothing and Equipment Drive for the Jericho Spring Street Neighborhood Center. Among those who will benefit will be their ministry partner, Athletes of Christ, and those who use the center for summer camp and year-round gymnasium activities for boys and girls. Suggestions for gently used items: athletic clothing (sweatshirts, shorts, shirts, athletic socks), cleats, sneakers, basketballs, soccer balls, shin guards, volleyballs, volleyball nets, wiffle balls and bats, pinnies, set up drill cones, badminton items, jump ropes, etc. Questions? EASTON LEARNING FOUNDATION TRIVIA BEE

Samuel Staples Elementary School

The Trivia Bee is a fun, lighthearted town-wide event that is attended by students, town officials, teachers, community members, and school administrators. Participants form 3 person teams, dress up in BEE-themed costumes (awards are given) and test their trivia smarts in a variety of topics. The environment is friendly, spirited and fun. An encyclopedic knowledge is absolutely NOT required as the goal of the event is to promote community and to raise money to fund educational enrichment. Last year over 60 teams participated! "THE BIG PICTURE" FILM SERIES PRESENT "RGB" SCREENING AND DISCUSSION

“The Big Picture” film series, cosponsored by the Redding League of Women Voters and the Mark Twain Library, presents “RBG”. This Oscar nominated documentary chronicles the extraordinary life and career of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, highlighting the esteemed jurist’s lifelong fight for gender equality. Doors open at 6:30 pm. Film begins at 7:00 pm. Following the film a discussion will be moderated by Kim O’Reilly, President Redding League of Women Voters.

DIY TEEN DUCT TAPE CRAFT
Saturday, March 23rd
2:00-3:00 PM @MTL

Grades 5-12. In this fun, easy craft program we will make duct tape pieces such as bracelets and flowers using an array of colorful tapes. All materials will be provided, but participants are welcome to bring their own tape. No experience required to participate. Light refreshments will be served. 

AUTHOR TALK: THE POWER OF A SIMPLE ACT OF KINDNESS

Recommended for ages 10 and up. First-time author Alex Fischetti will share his story of how one person’s love and encouragement helped him overcome the social isolation of Asperger’s Syndrome, a form of Autism. In the book The Lonesome Boy and the Blonde Haired Angel Alex tells the story of an autistic young man whose life changes for the better when a heaven sent angel appears. Her compassion and friendship brings the young man out of his isolated cocoon to become the social butterfly so many know today. Alex hopes that in sharing his story others will be open to receiving and generating kindness. This program is co-sponsored by the Joel Barlow High School Chapter of Best Buddies International.

AUTHOR TALK: 1777 – DANBURY ON FIRE! BY MILLICENT BELL HUGHES

Recommended for ages 10 and up. Virginia author Millicent Bell Hughes will speak about her journey to publish 1777 - Danbury on Fire!, a book inspired by her family’s connections to the Danbury area during the American Revolutionary War. She will talk about why genealogy is important to modern families and how to find information through varied (and sometimes unusual) sources. Audience input will steer Hughes' talk about her adventures in producing an area classic!

BARLOW SCIENCE POWER AT THE 57TH ANNUAL CONNECTICUT JUNIOR SCIENCE AND HUMANITIES SYMPOSIUM (JSHS)  

SATURDAY MARCH 9TH: All eight AP Chemistry students who registered for the CT JSHS were chosen to be an active participant this year. Nearly ninety students from across the state registered to be a participant this year in the symposium. Annika Morgan was selected as one of sixteen oral presenters selected.  Her project, “Deuterium Oxide (D2O) on Maintaining Viability in Coliphage Bacteriophages under Lower Temperatures to Model Live Attenuated Viral Vaccine Additives,”  placed her 6th Place. Owen O’Reilly was selected to be in the competitive poster competition with his project, “Preliminary Testing and Optimization of Various Polyphenol Molecules for Effectiveness of Non-Covalent Inhibition of TEM-1 Beta Lactamase in Penicillin-Resistant E. ColiBacteria.”  The final six student were selected in the non-competitive poster presentation.  These included Olivia Fassman, “Chlorophyll Deficiency in Acidic Soils on Eruca vesicaria sativa;” Christopher Gomolak, “Capacity of Nymphaeaceae for Phytoremediation of Zn+2 in Freshwater Applications ;” Kathryn Liu, “Augment Symbiotic Nitrogen Fixation in Helianthus annuus L. by Inoculation of Rhizobium diazotrophs to improve Drought Tolerance;” Madeleine McHale, “The Association of Tachycardia and Cognitive Tasks in Ages 14-16;” Sean McHale, “2D and 3D Convolutional Neural Networks for Real-Time Classification of Dynamic American Sign Language (ASL) for Lightweight Applications;” and Zachary Shortt, “ Sorption of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons into 1,4 Bio-Derived Butanediol Bags in the Waters of the Long Island Sound“. All students are mentored by Paul Testa and Dr. Katherine Nuzzo.

BUS SERVICE DURING INCLEMENT WEATHER

To Parent/Guardians of Student Drivers:
Students may always take the bus home without contacting the bus company. It is okay to leave a car in the parking lot if warranted. To “opt in” for morning service, call the Dattco Bus Company at 203-917-4524. Let the company know your address and the date(s) that you plan to take the bus. You may call in the morning if you anticipate foul weather. Just be sure to call before the buses start their runs at 6:30 a.m. Please contact Ms. Desmarais if you have any questions or concerns.
