#3LV CAREER HACKS FOR HUMP DAY

March 20, 2019

"Credibility comes from results. Everything else is just marketing.

- Richie Norton

Mujeres and Allies,

There’s a 1960’s R&B hit song performed by the famed all women group The Shirelles that had the lyrics “Mama said there would be days like this.” It’s a great song and great reminder of life’s ups and downs. Have you had one of those days? You tripped on the way up to the stage to give your talk. The report you thought you had spell checked--wasn’t.  The presentation you thought your boss would love goes flat. Some mistakes are easier to recover from than others. What do you do when a mistake sets your reputation a step back? What do you do if your team starts to doubt your strategy? Well you get back up. Start over. You work to gain the trust of your colleagues or your boss as quickly as possible.   This week’s #3LVCareerHacks is about the steps to take to reestablish your reputation and credibility when there’s a big fall.

Uno, dos, y tres. Let’s do this con ganas.

Tip #1  Acknowledge the mistake

If you didn’t meet your boss’s expectations or you let down your team--get out and acknowledge it-- fast. Don’t make the mistake of brushing it aside or making it seem like it really wasn’t a big deal.  A strong leader will value you for accepting responsibility because that is the first step in learning from a mistake and being an authentic leader.  Your team will appreciate your honesty and your accountability to them. If you can simply say, “I know this didn’t turn out the way you expected and that you are disappointed in my work. I’m taking responsibility for this and I’m working to improve so it doesn’t happen again.”

Tip #2  Get clear about what will make things right again

Once you acknowledge the mistake, it’s equally important to move on to what you will do to make sure it doesn’t happen again and if possible, work at fixing what you can.  This may require hiring a coach, going to your personal board of advisors for feedback or asking your boss for direction. Once you are clear on what to do to prevent the same mistake in the future, talk to your boss about your game plan. Or tell your team how you plan to do better.

Tip #3  Work hard and stand out again

Next, stick to your recovery plan--impeccably.  Whatever corrective actions you have decided to take, this is the time to make sure it works. Focus. Be intentional on meeting those new expectations. There is a lot riding on your first effort to get your next steps right.  It will help if you reduce any distractions or limit the extra projects you might not need right now. As you take corrective action--make it your very best work. This will convey your commitment, your tenacity and your ability to recognize the importance of your professional reputation.

That’s it. #3LVCareerHacks on recovering from a mistake and repairing your credibility on the job.
