$1B over 12 years from ESPN for the AAC. $6.94M per school annually, quadruple what each is getting now for its media rights. SBJ's Smith & Ourand broke the news as the Worldwide Leader gets rights to everything except a handful of MBB games on CBS & Navy FB's carve out with CBS Sports Network. Some AAC FB match-ups will hit ABC on Saturday afternoons & ESPN+ will play a major role. No grant of rights was signed by the schools, but Smith & Ourand note ESPN is protected if a member were to jump to another league. (link); The AP's Russo reports the AAC was pushing for $8M annually per league member. (link)
Georgia State & Sun Belt Prez Becker on the appointment of Atlantic 10 Executive Assoc. Commish & former Richmond/American AD Gill as the new Commish of the league, "Keith is a proven leader with deep experience across the many dimensions of intercollegiate athletics. Combining that with his passion, integrity and enthusiasm, Keith will be an outstanding leader as the Sun Belt continues on its rising trajectory." NCAA Prez Emmert on the move, "Keith has established himself as a national leader in college athletics and will bring to the Sun Belt a wealth of knowledge, talent, and leadership. His work on campuses, conference offices, the NCAA national office, and leadership of the Division I Council all give him a remarkable background for this position." (link)
USC Interim Prez Austin says the university will embark on a "complete investigation around athletics" as a result of the Operation Varsity Blues developments. When asked specifically about those pushing to out Trojans AD Swann, Austin turned back to the review of athletics, "After we complete that review and find out the facts of who knew what and/or who should have known what. That obviously will be something that will be reviewed with the board." (link)
OSKR's Schwarz provides insight on what's next in the Alston case as both parties are to comment on what they believe should be the outcome of the Jenkins case. If the two parties can't reach an agreement in the coming weeks, a motion of 10 pages or less is due by April 9th. Further, "Plaintiffs may file a response no later than April 23, 2019. Defendants may file a reply no later than April 30, 2019." Plus, "IT IS SO ORDERED." (link)
The Missourian embarks on a series covering the state of Missouri athletics, overall titled "The SEC Effect." Part I is a sport-by-sport review of accomplishments in the Big 12 & comparative outcomes in the SEC thus far, as well as average budgets for each sport in the two leagues. (link); Part II takes a deep dive into ticket sales & attendance for FB, "The difference between Missouri’s announced and actual attendance was between 15 and 18 percent for the 2016 and 2017 seasons, but that difference nearly tripled in 2018." Tigers Executive Assoc. AD for Marketing & Revenue Generation Luksis notes some high-flying FB teams of the past set the bar pretty high, "Obviously team success goes into it, and we’ve had a couple good years in a row. I fully believe it’ll be even better going into next year." Lots here. (link)
"Not a lot, honestly. That’s not to say we would never do sports, because who the heck knows. Never is a long time, but I don’t think that’s a problem right now. You really can’t own all the rights, so therefore at some point you need to solve some other problems. You can’t design for owning the rights because if that’s the only thing you’re doing you’re always going to be tiny." That's Apple SVP for Internet Software & Services Cue on how much he thinks about obtaining exclusive sports rights as the mega-digital firm gets ready to roll-out its new premium video service. A problem Apple certainly is trying to solve is a curation system that would surface key live moments from across the industry to keep fans right on the cusp of epic moments in real time. Here's the value prop: "In a world of infinite supply, Cue wants to be the middleman, letting fans know what’s worth watching and offering one-click access to action rather than worsening the fragmentation." More from Sports Illustrated's Feldman. (link)
The Big Ten MBB Tourney in Chicago drew 122,242 fans to the United Center, marking the second largest attendance in event history. The Windy City set the mark of 124,543 back in 2013. (link); The SEC MBB Tourney semifinal between Tennessee and Kentucky delivered a 2.1 rating and 3.29M viewers on ESPN, up 77% in ratings and 80% in viewership from last year. Ranks as the eighth-most watched game of the season on any network. The championship game game between Tennessee and Auburn had a 1.45 rating and 2.24M viewers, down 6% and 12%, respectively, year over year. Lowest rated title game for the league since 2013. (link)

Cleveland State Swimming HC Graham resigned last month after a university probe into drug use within his program. Notably, "CSU conducted an internal review and found the allegations had merit. Two senior athletic department officials also resigned following the review. Some team members were disciplined according to university policy." No word yet on who the senior officials were. Suppose we'll learn more in the very near future. (link)
The Carousel: A move no media members were forecasting as Saint Joseph's AD Bodensteiner announces she'll hire a new MBB HC. (link); Boston College AD Jarmond says MBB HC Christian will return and the Eagles with further invest in the areas of Strength & Conditioning, Wellness, the recruiting budget & a locker room revamp. (link); Wyoming AD Burman on keeping MBB HC Edwards: "I have a lot of confidence he'll get it done. I do. As crazy as it sounds, I don't believe we're that far away. But he's got to get some players and he's got to develop players. If he comes up short in that regard, it'll be tough." (link); Alabama A&M removes the interim tag for MBB HC Howard. He led the team this past season to a 5-27 record. (link); UMBC will use Collegiate Consulting to search for a new WBB HC. (link)
Personnel, continued: TCU parts ways with under-FBI-investigation MBB AC Barker. (link); Loyola (Maryland) AD Woodruff gets a three-year term on the NCAA Division I Men's LAX Committee. (link); Indiana State AD Clinkscales tabbed for a four-year term on the NCAA Division I Nominating Committee. (link); East-West Shrine Game Executive Dir. Richardson will step down. Former Campbell AD Roller will serve in an interim basis and oversee the 2020 game. (link); Miami (OH) Men's Hockey HC Blasi out after 20 years leading the RedHawks. (link); Arizona Women's Soccer HC Amato gets a new three-year deal. (link); Ole Miss gives MBB HC Davis a new four-year deal. (link); Cal Dir. of Track & Field and XC Sandoval will retire at the end of the season after a 37-year career with the Bears. (link); Under Armour hires former Nike staffer Jarvis as chief design officer. (link); Santa Clara names Jesuit School of Theology Dean Father O'Brien as the school's next president. Starts in July. (link)
Kentucky MBB HC Calipari stacked $1.3M in outside income in 2017-18, $1M of which was from a Facebook behind the scenes series with his program. Calipari says the cash has been been earmarked for donation, "In a perfect world, some of the money we made from the Facebook series would have been distributed to our players. Our rules simply won’t allow it. Instead, I’m proud of how they chose to allow themselves to be part of doing something that would make a difference in the lives of so many other people through charitable donations." (link)
Eye brows undoubtedly raised around the nation when news came of Ohio State-to-Miami (FL) FB transfer Martell's waiver getting approved. The Miami Herald's Jackson looks at the factors behind the decision as Martell's attorney says, "This was a fact and circumstances case. I don’t think this is something you will see a wholesale change to the way people look at [NCAA transfer cases]. It was a unique situation." Martell's attorney argued the Buckeyes made no attempt to keep Martell after landing Georgia-to-Ohio State transfer Fields, "At that point, he’s run off and now has to find a new home and found [UM]," also notes that OSU didn't object to Martell being eligible this season. (link)
CBSSports.com's Dodd reports the potential FB rule change of longer suspensions for student-athletes receiving their second targeting penalty within the season is unlikely to pass. Dodd gets comments from West Virginia AD & Rules Committee Chair Lyons, "You could make a bad call … and the kid is sitting out a whole 'nother game. We've got to discuss that. You send a message and you want to change behavior. It's changing the behavior, not only because they're hitting the kid wrong but it's for that kid's safety as well." (link)
More Deals: Air Force is the 33rd collegiate client for Tailgate Guys. Falcons AD Pine says it's all about "working to enhance our fan experience and game day atmosphere." (link); Marquette is the latest addition to INFLCR's growing portfolio. Golden Eagles Senior Assoc. AD for Communications Kuykendall: "We want to provide our student-athletes with the resources necessary to maximize their experiences while at Marquette and our partnership with INFLCR is another example of those efforts. Our men's basketball players are tremendous ambassadors for the University and we can't wait for them to start maximizing their social media brand." (link); Learfield IMG College & TicketGuardian ink a multi-year deal, which per CRO Rawlings, will give over 20 departments "a solution for schools that desire to provide their fans a peace of mind when purchasing game tickets. Now, when fans buy tickets, they'll know they're covered if unexpected circumstances arise. This is a smart and ambitious endeavor by TicketGuardian, aligning with us as well as Paciolan to deepen its presence in the college space and introduce an excellent value add we believe fans will appreciate." (link)
Former LSU Board of Regents Chair Lipsey calls for the exit of university Prez Alexander & Tigers AD Alleva. Lipsey: "As we move from one scandal headline to another, we have now passed the point where the Board of Supervisors must remove King Alexander and began the search for a qualified Flagship leader. […] Clearly it would be viewed nationally as insanity if Alleva were to continue as Athletic Director if Will Wade returns to coaching at LSU. In the much more likely event that LSU is now forced to hire a fourth basketball coach in eleven years. [...] There should be no delay in replacing him immediately with a respected interim like Skip Bertman. We cannot stop there. We must immediately remove the leadership of LSU responsible for and directing Alleva’s actions." More. (link)
Developments in the legal proceedings between UConn & former MBB HC Ollie include some clarity on former student-athletes Purvis, Gibbs & Larrier being those in question for training with a friend of Ollie's that was determined to be an NCAA violation. Further, the university would like to submit interview transcripts, instead of live testimony, for witnesses, something Ollie's camp is pushing back on as it wants to have the opportunity to cross examine in front of an arbitrator. (link)
The New Mexico Attorney General's Office has asked the state District Court to consider if the representation of other former New Mexico staffers by attorney Kennedy is a conflict of interest for his defense of former Lobos AD Krebs. Kennedy also has former MBB DOBO Hopkins & former UNM EVP/CFO Harris as clients. Here's the alleged conflict, "The AG’s Office also alleges that Kennedy has advised Harris – the former UNM executive vice president and chief financial officer – not to speak with the AG’s Office for the Krebs investigation." Kennedy says there's no conflict & will file a response to that end. A bit more. (link)
The NCAA released a new 'Day in the Life' of a student-athlete commercial earlier in the week. Former Colorado State Pueblo (DII) FB student-athlete & former NFL linebacker Vaughn asks via Twitter, "Where the early morning workout? I dont see any ice wrapped on that arm hes raising. Did he not have any homework or studying to do before bed? What kind of major he got? Underwater basket weaving? And this bum doesnt watch film but got time to dance. NCAA is lying to these kids." Former Kansas State FB student-athlete Walker: "Uh what....they made that look like the easiest thing ever lmaooooo. This is misleading..." A number of additional responses in this Awful Announcing piece. (link)
Speaking of new commercials, remember when the son of Northwestern AD Phillips got super emotional during the Wildcats' NCAA run in 2017? It's part of a new Pizza Hut campaign, but the younger Phillips is pushing all of his proceeds to Pizza Hut's literacy program, "I am not interested in getting any more fame from this, believe me, but when the chance came to help others, that’s when I agreed to it and I’m honored to make a positive change out of this. The matriarch of the Phillips family says the sum could easily cover a year of tuition at NU. (link)
Also Noticed: From the Law360 paywall: "A former Northwestern University football player has sued the NCAA in Illinois federal court, accusing the association of failing to protect the school’s players from the dangers of head injuries despite knowing the risks associated with the game."
