Woolly News - March 2018

Welcome to Spring! The sun is out but the air is chilly. Having sun 3 days in a row is energizing, and after this icy winter, such a nice sight to see. BUT still too cold for working in our gardens. So why not enhance your needle felting skills and take a workshop. The Saturday barn owl workshop at the fibre farm sold out so we added a Sunday session. If your were thinking about taking it, it's THIS Sunday, March 24. Or you can hop into action and get ready for Easter by making a cute sleepy bunny. Did someone say Needle Felt Paint Night? Tea at the White House is hosting a funtabulous fibrous paint night on April 8 and it comes complete with a pot of your fav tea! If you're looking for something to do with the family, why not take them to the Art Gallery of Burlington from April 5 – 7 for Kaleidoscope, where there is handmade art for sale and fun children’s activities to do with every guild.

As I know most of us were holed up this winter like a hobbit, make sure to email me photos of your felted art projects, or better yet, come to this month’s Needle Felt Together on March 27! I hope to see you all soon. Happy Felting!!

Bluebird on a String

By this time of the year we can’t WAIT for Spring! Why not get in the mood by learning to needle felt a bluebird of happiness. Using a pipe cleaner, learn how to create a beak and wrap wool around it to create the core shape. You will learn to attach wool locks for wings and a nylon cord so you can let your bird sway in the breeze.

Once you make this bird, you can make other songbirds.

NEEDLE FELT TIP OF THE MONTH

Adding Wool Locks to Your Critter

Take a small bunch of wool locks, make sure the locks are lined up and flat, and fold the bunch in half. Place the curlier loose edges against the head shape at the top middle of the body and felt into the fold to attach the locks onto the core shape. Stab with your 36-triangle needle at least 40 times back and forth to make sure they are securely on the shape. Do this step from the middle of the core body shape to bottom by adding locks down one side from the middle and then down the other. When done you will start a new row following the same instructions. You can leave a small 0.25” gap between rows to save on wool. Do these steps until you get to the butt end of your critter. The loose locks will fan out and you can encourage them to do so by gently pulling some of the locks apart. If some locks stand out too much, you can stab the middle of them a few times to secure them closer to the body.
