What a day for our Apprentices and Champion Electric at the 25th Annual ABC So-Cal Craft Championships back in January. All {4} of our competing Apprentices placed, {2} are going to Nationals in March and we had such a great turn out of Champion supporters! This year's competition was momentous!
Craft Championships
On the last Saturday in January each year, the top electrical and plumbing apprentices in the region participate in a daylong practical competition highlighting the knowledge and skills they have acquired during their classroom and on-the-job training at Southern California Chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) in Anaheim, CA. The electrical competition is divided into two groups, Residential/Commercial and Commercial/Industrial, with ten competitors in each. To be selected to compete regionally, apprentices must outscore their classmates on a written test offered in November the previous year. Regional winners move on to compete at the national level with winners from other regions across the nation.

Champion Electric had 4 electrical apprentices competing at this year’s event. Carlos Bencomo (Commercial/Industrial), Ryan Jordan (Commercial/Industrial), Andrew Cruz (Residential/Commercial) and Quinn Jones (Residential/Commercial). Carlos and Andrew placed 1st in their respective groups. Quinn placed 2nd and Ryan placed 3rd.
Carlos and Andrew will be representing Champion Electric and ABC Southern California at the ABC National Craft Championship Competition on March 27th in Long Beach, CA. It will be the first time in twenty years that Champion Electric will be represented at the national competition. Nathan Montgomery competed at the national level and placed 2nd in 1999.

Congratulations to all the regional competitors and best of luck to Carlos and Andrew in the national competition.
You represent Champion Electric and ABC Southern California well!
"I am ecstatic and beyond proud of all four of Champion Electric's apprentices that competed and placed in our local Craft Championship Competition at ABC SoCal. Absolutely unbelievable!!  This is an amazing accomplishment and a testament to these apprentices taking pride in their craft and living out the values of Champion Electric. A HUGE congratulations to all 4 of our apprentices!"

Meet our Service Department

Richard Glancy

Introducing our newest Account Manager, Richard Glancy.  He started with Champion in 2007 and has almost 15 years electrical experience.  Richard's move from being one of Champion's Service Foreman, gives him a great advantage as he understands firsthand what the Service Foreman’s day-to-day tasks are, which helps in both leadership and providing competitive pricing.  His attention to detail gives our customers the satisfaction of knowing Richard will handle their projects in, not only a neat and efficient way, but a way that matters to them.

Richard’s years of experience, work ethic, attention to detail, and eagerness to learn is a tremendous asset to Champion and our customers.

What is your favorite type of electrical project or your specialty?
"I like commercial and industrial type electrical work. Since your work is seen most the time, it needs to be on point and look like art."
What is the most important or top priority to you when it comes to a customer?
"I feel that quality is my most important because if you provide the best quality, then the customer will be happy and more likely to return in the future."

What do you look forward to or what drew you to become an Account Manager?
"Being a good example to my fellow electrician’s so that they see that hard work can pay off, there is always room to grow with the company you work for, and to be a good leader for my guys to look to when they need help."

#FeaturedProject
Las Encinas Hospital
The Las Encinas Hospital project is an Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (California Health and Human Services Agency - OSHPD) project which means the project has extensive construction requirements.  It is being constructed from the ground-up and is a 2-story mental health facility on an existing medical campus in Pasadena.  This project includes a new utility connection and backup generator with 6 automatic transfer switches.

Having the main electrical panels above the 2 floors in a penthouse has made this a very unique project.   All of the power enters the building on the first floor, then is routed up to the penthouse where the main distribution panels can be found.  The power is then sent back down to feed all of the branch panelboards throughout the building on the first and second floor.  Foreman Garrett French, his Leadmen Anthony Centanni and Jacob Enos, as well as the rest of the crew have been able to install approximately 80,000 feet of conduit in the building.

A challenge we encountered while reviewing the CAD drawings was our equipment was going to be too tall to fit under the structural steel within the electrical room.  The City of Pasadena capped the building at a specific height, so we were unable to adjust the height of the ceiling.  Champion had to completely change the layout of all electrical rooms found in the penthouse prior to installation. This could have been an expensive disaster if we had found this out during installation and not on the CAD drawings.
This project started in 2017 and will continue throughout 2019.
Owner: Signature Healthcare; GC/CM: Jokake Construction Services, Inc.
Estimator: Randy Robison; Project Manager: Kevin Shearer; CAD Designer: Wayne Ridder; Foreman: Garrett French; Crew Size: 10-18
