New Exhibits at North Dakota State Museums

BISMARCK, N.D.—“Chisels and Shavings: North Dakota Woodcarvings,” on exhibit at the North Dakota Heritage Center & State Museum, features contemporary and historic woodcarvings. A variety of carvings using different techniques are on display, including some traditional cultural styles. Featured is a puppet carved during the 1930s by one of the Flickertail Woodcarvers' founding members, Works Progress Administration artist Telle Rudser. This exhibit was produced in cooperation with the Bismarck Flickertail Woodcarvers.

Also on exhibit at the North Dakota Heritage Center & State Museum, “Small Things Considered” is a mini-exhibit of 14 photos showcasing artifacts from the archaeological collections of the State Historical Society of North Dakota. If displayed in a large exhibit case, small things might get overlooked, but magnified many times their actual size, they get the spotlight they deserve.

"Sundogs and Sunflowers: Folklore and Folk Art of the Northern Great Plains," based on the award-winning book of the same name, will open in April at the Pembina State Museum. Twenty unique pieces of folk art, made by contemporary North Dakota artists, are paired with stories, legends, and traditions of the prairie. This unique exhibit celebrates the rich folk heritage of the northern Great Plains. This exhibit was produced by the North Dakota Council on the Arts.

In May, a small exhibit about the 50th Anniversary of “Zip to Zap” will be installed at the North Dakota Heritage Center & State Museum. Watch for more information at statemuseum.nd.gov.

Admission to these exhibits is free. For more information, contact Genia Hesser, 701.328.2102. The North Dakota Heritage Center & State Museum is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
