PAW PRINTS for March 2019

Pets add so much to our lives and families--let’s celebrate them every day!

Senior Pets are Special <3 Spring forward, and adopt a Senior pet--they've still got lots of spring in their step, and snuggly love to give!  <3

Visit the shelter to meet some of our special Seniors, like Mingle--this cute 8 year-old beagle mix, would love to be your walking, and lifelong, companion. Our Senior shelter pets have low adoption fees of just $50 to help them find Forever Homes.....so much love and wisdom in return!

You can see all of our available pets here: http://fspca.org/adopt.html

Can't adopt right now? Our furbabies love vistors, playtime and walks too!!

SHARE the love, adopt a Senior! #specialSeniors #seniorsrock #adoptlove

DID YOU KNOW?
•    Last month 24 animals found their forever homes, 15 were reunited with loving families, and 2 were transferred to wonderful rescue partners--a total of 41 animals with a second chance. Your shares, donations, and volunteer hours help to make these happy new beginnings possible. Thank you all!
•    Our Lonely Heart’s Club pets (animals at the shelter more than 6 months) have low adoption fees of just $20!  We currently have 8 pets in the club--available cuties are: Thelma, Swirly, Leon, Brent, Brenda, Camilla, Gage and Bowser. Please share their photos and stories, to help them find the forever homes they’re waiting and wishing for. See all of our available pets on our website www.fspca.org

What happens at the FSPCA when a pet is Lost or Found?

Our Shelter Manager, Jessy, shared some of the details:

🐾 You can report lost or found pets daily. Even on a “closed” for cleaning day (Mondays and Tuesdays), our doors remain open for lost and found animals, donations and volunteers.

🐾 Every animal that comes to our shelter as a stray will get scanned for a microchip, and checked for any other ID-- like a collar and tags. We then take a picture of them to post onto "Lost and Found Pets" on Facebook, to try to reunite them with their families as soon as possible.

🐾 Each animal is placed on a stray hold for either 5 or 10 days, depending on whether they have ID coming in.

🐾 Some animals come in frightened and cautious, so we have to take it slow with those animals, to be careful not to provoke them into acting out, or biting out of fear.

🐾 We then set up a area for them in a kennel or cat cage, and try to make them as comfortable as possible during their stay here.

🐾 When we interact with incoming animals, we try to build their trust by going slow, using low-tone voices, and lots of treats :), if they are not too nervous to take them.

🐾 During the intake, we also check them over really well for any obvious signs of injuries or illness. If some are evident, we then go through the steps of working to make them better through medical care.

You can report an animal missing or found by calling our staff at 434-591-0123, emailing details and photos to office@fspca.org and/or manager@fspca.org, or by filling out the Lost/Found Form on our website.

Of note: Of the 124 lost pets reunited with their families at the FSPCA in 2018, 17% were reunited because the animal had a microchip with current information. You can increase the chances of finding your missing pet, and more quickly, through updated microchips, collars and tags.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?
  • VOLUNTEER! We are always in need of volunteers to help with our adoption outings, shelter socialization, transports and fundraising events. You can learn more about volunteering with us here: http://fspca.org/volunteer.html. With springtime coming, we can especially use shelter volunteers to socialize cats and dogs, and give our canine shelter pets walks in the nice weather!
  • The shelter is currently in need of canned dog and puppy food, canned cat and kitten food, cat tent beds and 6 foot leashes. You can view and order from our Amazon Wishlist here: (http://a.co/iVY4MS0). PUPDATES! We loved this update from FSPCA alum Cherry's family this month, in celebration of her 5 year "gotcha" anniversary, and 8th "birthday." What a wonderful life of love and adventures she is having--the kind of future we wish for all of our shelter furbabies.  <3

From Cherry's adoptive Mom: "Hello, I wanted to send an update on our dog "Cherry." We adopted her from FSPCA 5 years ago today. Since we don't officially know her actual age, we made the day we adopted her, her birthday. So today would make her "8 yrs old." We kept the name that the FSPCA gave her, and I have to say, the name fits her personality perfectly. If I can think of one word to describe her, it's "sweet." When we first got her, she was so shy and nervous, but at the same time you can see she was so sweet, and had so much love to give. <3

Eventually, she broke out of her shell and we were able to see her personally develop into the best dog ever. She loves everyone she sees, is playful for maybe five minutes, then the rest of the time is a lazy couch potato beagle that wants attention and snuggles."

We're thankful for pawesome adoptive parents (who are also awesome fosters for us), and the love they shower on our furry friends!

CAT TAILS! These two sweeties, Blue and Spook are wishing for a home and family where they can share their "golden years." This pair of 16-year-old special Seniors have spent life together, and were recently surrendered due to severe medical issues for their owner. Do you have room in your heart and home for these sweethearts? May the "Luck of the Irish" be with them this month in finding "Forever Love."  <3

Big thanks to awesome Volunteer, Amanda, for sharing their story:

"If you are inspired to open your home to some sweet Senior kitties, look no further. These 2 lovelies are at the Fluvanna SPCA. They are 16 yr old litter mates. They have been together their whole lives, and were surrendered due to severe medical issues of the owner. Anyone?

Thank you for caring and sharing! Please share, to help them catch the eye of that special someone who is just right for them. #seniorsmatter #rescuelove #felinefamily

FOREVER FAMILY <3 Sweet Spirit, who had been with us for over a year, found his very own Forever Family last month. He has a pawesome story, so we wanted to share this update. Spirit was a bit harder to place because he is deaf, and came across as shy to shelter visitors, who didn't always see his true "spirit" on display.

Spirit was shared recently by the amazing folks at Susie's Senior Dogs, who help to spread the word far and wide on waiting Senior pets, who are often overlooked by adopters. Well, a wonderful family saw the post through a family share, and contacted the FSPCA about visiting with their rescue dog Zeus for a "meet and greet" to see if their family was the right forever fit for Spirit. Thankfully, it was a match made in heaven (well, Virginia anyway:)), and Spirit went home with Carl, James and Zeus....and got to meet feline brother Dern at his new home. (We are sure Dern will fall for his charms soon!)

Thank you to Spirit's wonderful new family, and to Susie's for helping to spread the word! Every post and share might be the one that helps an animal meet the "just right" fit for them. Thank you all for caring and sharing the love!

Have an FSPCA alum update of your own to share? You can message us on our Facebook page, or email outreach@fspca.org. We love to see our furbabies with their wonderful Forever Families!

Please continue to share the love, and our homeless pets in search of forever, by sharing our newseletter, Facebook and Instagram posts!
