6 Spring things to do on Bowen

Blossoms, birds, boats and much more. . .

Spring brings blossoms. One of the earliest you'll find when walking Bowen's trails is the native salmon berry. These small pink blossoms add a splash of colour to the forest trails. You'll find salmon berry bushes around Killarney Lake and on other trails in Crippen Regional Park.
Spring brings birds and baby birds... lots of them. The Canadian Geese goslings hatch in March and April and it's a very common sight to see large flocks of the goslings wandering the Snug Cove area, particularly around Snug Cove beach and the Lagoon – and swimming lessons in the water.
Explore Bowen's scenic shoreline and beaches by water. Bowen Island Sea Kayaking opens April 6 for the season. You can rent kayaks and paddle boards or join one of their guided tours, including sunset and moonlight paddles.
Don't let a little spring rain dampen your adventures. Dress for the weather – including raincoat, boots and umbrella, if necessary . These folks are viewing Bridal Veil Falls, which is always more impressive after a good rain.
Who doesn't like a cool treat on a sunny spring day? Enjoy an ice cream cone while strolling the Snug Cove boardwalk or relaxing on a bench overlooking the marina. The Union Steamship Company's ice cream window is just too convenient to pass by. Dare you to try!
Visit Davies Heritage Orchard, Crippen Regional Park, to see 100+ year old apple and fruit trees in bloom. Some of these trees look so old and ravaged, it's remarkable to see the blossoms and fruit in the fall. Mark your calendar for an Apple Blossom Festival on April 27.

Bowen's Unique Offerings

Bowen Island is a small community – you won't find any shopping malls or fast-food takeaways here. Instead, you'll find charming little shops with curated collections and restaurants serving freshly-made dishes, often with locally-sourced ingredients. When you visit, we hope you'll enjoy some of Bowen's different flavours, artistic creations, and West Coast style. Here's a short introduction to a couple of the island's unique offerings.

The Snug Café – where the locals go

Opening at 5 AM on weekdays (the first commuter ferry departure is 5:30 AM) and 7 AM on weekends, the hard-working folk at the Snug Café are much beloved for serving hot java, all-day breakfast and freshly baked goods. As the name suggests, the Snug is a cozy little café but once the warm spring weather arrives, people spill out to the picnic tables and outside courtyard,  to soak up the sunshine while savouring a meal.

Enjoy classic dishes such as the Full English Breakfast, Eggs Benny, and waffles, plus dishes with a Snug twist, such as the popular Snugwich: two scramble eggs, ham, Swiss Cheese on a toasted croissant. At lunch, the menu adds a selection of soups, salads, sandwiches and, popular with both vegetarians and carnivores, a delicious Beet Burger. Don't miss tasting some of their house recipes, such as the secret-recipe sausage roll.

Located on the main road just up from the ferry, you can't miss the cute little robin-egg blue building with the bright sun umbrellas. If you're going on a hike, the Snug has a good selection of takeaway items, such as wraps, home-baked goods, smoothies and more. The Snug Café serves breakfast and lunch daily until 4 PM.

Squirrel & Connie Wright Original Knits Boutique

The cute little yellow cottage near the ferry is home to two Bowen boutiques and they are both brimming with natural-fibre fashions and ethically-sourced accessories and giftware. A must-visit!

Connie Wright

Long-time Bowen resident Connie's boutique features natural-fibre clothing, semi-precious jewelry and beads, giftware from her travels in Asia and handmade original knitwear. If you appreciate quality-made comfortable clothing, you'll find casual, classic garments made from silk, linen, bamboo, cotton and wool.

Connie has always been enterprising, starting her first commercial enterprise at the young age of eight: selling handmade flower corsages door-to-door in North Vancouver. By age fourteen Connie had not only learned to knit but was creating her very own designs....and she hasn't stopped. Check out her hand designed and handmade sweaters and vests. If you have a specific colour or style that you're looking for, she welcomes custom orders. She has customers from across the province and the USA that visit her store annually. Squirrel

When you enter Squirrel be prepared to smile. Caro has filled her little boutique with ethically and sustainably-made clothing, giftware, jewelry, hats and products that do-good or give back in some way. And her store will make you feel good because it's full of fun and humorous things. Take the weird and wonderful creatures made by Get Stuf'd. 10% of sales benefit animal welfare. The hand-felted animal ornaments are made in Peru and proceeds support rural communities and help protect the Spectacled Bear.

There is a backstory to each of the items that Caro has selected and if you're interested, she'll share the details. It's conscious shopping that not only does good, it feels good, too. If you're in need of a sun hat, you'll find the most amazing hats from Madagascar made by a nonprofit organization that provides educational opportunities for disadvantaged women and children. Now that's styling!
