Be Here Now

Hi <<First Name>>!

Where are you right now?
Did you have to think about it? Maybe stop walking and look up.

You might be surprised what you see.

We are so co
nnected to our phones physically and emotionally we loose track of our bodies and where we are in the moment.

Our mind is in sensory overload with all the information we are trying to take in at one time. This increases our anxiety, effects our sleep, digestion, tight painful neck, shoulders and back. There is a feeling of unease.

In Cal Newport’s latest book, ‘Digital Minimalism’ he talks about the effects of social media (social media = all input from other brains), and our ability to have active, productive, healthy lives. The average person spends 50 minutes every day on Facebook products. One report said we touch our phones an average of six times an hour.

Constant input mode doesn’t give us time to digest and reflect on the information. This can make us feel detached or reactionary.

Cal says we are uncomfortable with being bored. Every bit of down time we pick up our phone, has messaged us, how’s your latest post, what’s the latest someone else has done? Then wonder why we have difficulty focusing on a task, especially if it’s challenging.

He compares this to an athlete eating junk food then having difficulty performing on the playing field.

Our junk food, our treat, is the phone and social media = all input from other people. When we eat so much junk food we don’t have time to digest the information.

What to do? Productive meditation. It’s like cognitive exercise. Get out into nature, go for a walk or bike ride by yourself. No phone, no earbuds, no music. Just you. Focus on thinking about one thing. When you mind wonders, gently come back to the thought you wanted to focus on.

When we are challenged by focusing on something, we reach for our phones. Especially if
we can see them or if there in our hand.

'Be Here Now’ challenge
How long can you go with out your phone?
Turn it off.
Put it in another room.
Go for a walk or bike ride without it.
Energetically separate yourself from your phone.

* Bonus points - no phone in your bedroom at night.

Let’s have fun with this. Tell me how you do. Are there any funny, inspiring, strange things that happen from doing this?

I’ll share my experience and yours with others. No worries, I won’t use your name.

Be Here Now!
You might be amazed at what you see.
