Dear Neuroscience Ireland Members, Colleagues and Friends,

It's been a busy couple of months since our last newsletter. Brain Awareness Week last week was a huge success - thanks to you all for contributing to this. We have more news on this, and much, much more below. Remember that, if you ever have any news or events you would like us to share with the Irish neuroscience community, please email us at neuroscienceireland@gmail.com.

We'd also like to remind you that membership of Neuroscience Ireland is on an annual basis so if you joined in 2018 (or any other year) your membership is now due for renewal. You can renew by clicking on the button below.

As always, membership of Neuroscience Ireland entitles you to apply for our Travel Bursaries (now open here) and Conference Grants, and gives you full membership of FENS with their significant associated benefits.

With warm regards,

Michelle, Eilís and all at the NSI Council.

Brain Awareness Week NSI Event

The NSI Brain Awareness Week event organised by Dr Áine Kelly and Dr Richard Roche was an outstanding success. The evening began with a description of the neuroscience of synaesthesia by Prof Fiona Newell. Synesthete pianist, Svetlana Rudenko, then played 3 pieces on a Steinway grand piano, while synesthete artist, Timothy Leyden, produced three very different canvasses in response to each piece of music.

Brain Awareness Week event held at UCD

Also during Brain Awareness Week, UCD's Dr Derek Costello organised a fun-filled, interactive neuroscience education event with researchers and secondary school teachers. The workshops were hosted by Alex Campbell from the British Neuroscience Association.

Read more about the BNA's education initiatives here and see some photos below.
Brain Awareness Week event held at NUI Galway

Now a long-running, annual event, NUI Galway's "My Amazing Brain" event organised by Dr Karen Doyle was superb. The event attracted almost 200 secondary school children to the Galway Neuroscience Centre where they had an opportunity to participate in numerous interactive activities and games. Well done to all involved!
Brain Awareness Week event hosted by Women in Research Ireland

Also during Brain Awareness Week, Women in Research Ireland held an event at Science Gallery Dublin to discuss challenges facing students in higher education with Minister for Mental Health & Older People, Jim Daly. More here.

You can follow Women in Research Ireland on Twitter or on Facebook, and you can email them here. Thanks to Joanne Kenny, TCD for the photo.

Ireland's First Brain Bee!
This year, Ireland saw its first ever International Brain Bee competition. This was held at NUI Galway during Brain Awareness Week, and was organised by Prof John Kelly.

Three Galway-based secondary schools participated in the competition, with 16 students taking part. Michael Flaherty from St Enda's College was the overall winner - congratulations Michael!

The International Brain Bee was founded over 20 years ago with the mission to inspire young people to study and pursue careers in neuroscience (read more here).

The International Brain Bee promotes student engagement with neuroscience through a three-tiered competition: students start by signing up for a Local Brain Bee, the winners of which compete in their country's Regional Brain Bee. Every year, Regional Brain Bees send one representative to compete at the International Brain Bee world championship.

Given the success of this year's inaugural event, we hope to extend this event throughout Ireland next year to give our secondary school students the opportunity to fully participate in this international contest.
BNS2019 Festival of Neuroscience
NSI is a Festival Partner for BNA2019 and the NSI Council has also taken on the role of Local Organising Committee for the Festival. Click on the banner below to access the NSI scientific stream within the BNA2019 Festival of Neuroscience.
In addition to the excellent scientific programme, we have an exciting series of events targeted at the public, patients, patient organisations and anyone with an interest in the brain. All events are free and open to all so please encourage your family, friends and colleagues to come along!
We now have 10 events on the BNA2019 website and more are still to come. Click any of the images below for more information and to book your FREE ticket!
Meet the Irish Neuro-Authors at BNA2019!

We're also delighted to let you know that all of these fantastic neuroscience books, written by Irish authors, will be available to buy from the Neuroscience Ireland stand at BNA2019. Most of the authors will also attend the Festival so you will have the opportunity to meet-the-author and get your copy signed! Come to the NSI stand at BNA2019 for more information.
