poets & saxophonists in full flight

Half a dozen poets take the stage tonight (Thursday, 3/21 at 7pm) in the itinerant reading series organized by Ingrid Keir and Jennifer Barone called Birds of Paradise, that "honors the lineage of phenomenal, inventive and prolific women who have helped to shape and guide us as artists, writers and creative beings." In this perfect confluence of National Poetry Month and Women's History Month, the reading will feature Bay Area poets Cassandra Rockwood-Rice, Jennifer Barone, Kimi Sugiyoka, Lauren Ito, Norma Smith and Thea Matthews.

And on Sunday, at 2pm, two traveling writers stop in with new books to launch... Karen Hildebrand is an editor at Dance Magazine in NYC, as well as a poet and playwright; her poetry collection, Crossing Pleasure Avenue is new out from Indolent Press. And Ron Riekki, who hails from Michigan's Upper Peninsula, is here with his just-released book, Posttraumatic: Essays and Flash Fiction on the Military, Prison, Iggy Pop, the Devil and Writing -- need we say more? San Francisco poet Will Walker opens the reading, all hosted by the inimitable poet, satirist and songwriter known in these parts (and in far-flung outposts of the literary universe) as Klipschutz.

And then there's the jazz...

There's so much to say about the four shows that span the five days Friday to Tuesday, that we'll encourage you to click over to the store's website to read up on it all.

Here's the link you'll want for that:

Here, we'll just list the shows, that run the gamut to just plain fun to simply amazing:

230 Jones Street kicks it off Friday after work, from 5:30-8:00pm. That's this Friday, March 22nd!

Michael Zilber reluctantly but solemnly promises not to play any Beatles covers Saturday night, 7:30-10pm at jazz club... when lights are low. With Keith Saunders,  Peter Barshay and Akira Tana.

Rob Sudduth digs deep with Dahveed Behroozi and Jason Lewis Sunday afternoon at 4:30pm.

And on Tuesday, 7-9pm, Sylvia Cuenca drives a trio that cruises effortlessly on the guitar of Roni Ben-Hur, with Harvie S maintaining the bass line. Just passing through out of NYC, so catch them if you possibly can!
We open every day at 11 a.m. to sell books!

Come visit us at 653 Chenery Street
in San Francisco's charming Glen Park neighborhood.
