THE HIGHLIGHTS

New Zealand has some announcements.

THE BACKGROUND.

Last week, at least 50 people died after a gunman entered mosques in New Zealand and opened fire. The gunman, a 28 year old Australian, is a white nationalist who wrote an 87-page manifesto targeting immigrants and Muslims. And is expected to rep himself in court. The shooting’s led to a debate surrounding New Zealand’s gun laws - and promises from the gov to make some changes.

THE HAPPENINGS.

Yesterday, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern revealed these changes. Hint: a ban on military-style semiautomatic guns, high-capacity magazines, and parts that allow weapons to be switched into the kind of guns used in the mosque shooting. Meaning New Zealanders will be waving goodbye to these types of guns - even if they already own them.

THE REACTION.

Ardern says the opposition’s already agreed to put these bans in place. And lobbying groups have said while the laws are harsh, they’re worth the safety of the country. Meanwhile, citizens who already own a weapon that’s being banned may have an amnesty period to return them to the gov. And there’s been talk of creating a buyback program. ICYDK, you’re not the only one comparing how New Zealand deals with guns and shootings to how the US deals with them.

SO…?

Last week, New Zealand experienced the worst mass shooting in decades. Now, they’re banning certain types of weapons. TBD on whether the US starts to follow.

THE ACTION

USA: Recently, Amnesty International - a human rights group - announced that US airstrikes in Somalia have been killing civilians. Reminder: al-Shabab - which is associated with Al-Qaeda - controls regions of Somalia. So for years, the US has been launching attacks there - attacks that have escalated since Trump took office. Now, a human rights group is coming forward and saying 14 civilians have died in five recent airstrikes - a possible violation of international humanitarian law. Aka a war crime. In other news, a woman is suing Harvard for apparently profiting from early photos of slaves - slaves the woman says she’s descended from. Stay tuned.

POLITICS: Yesterday, the Justice Dept said ‘investigation, underway’ and issued subpoenas in a criminal investigation of Boeing. Reminder: months ago, a 737 Max 8 plane crashed in Indonesia, killing all 189 people on board. Then, recently, another 737 Max 8 plane crashed - this time, in Ethiopia - killing all 157 passengers. Leading dozens of countries and airlines to ground this plane type - and launch investigations. Now, it looks like the Justice Dept is subpoenaing Boeing. Meanwhile, all eyes are on Prez Trump. Over the past couple days, he’s continually attacked Sen John McCain (R-AZ), who passed away a few months ago. Cue backlash.

BIZ: Yesterday, Europe said ‘there’s an infinite number of reasons why we don’t like you’ and hit Google with an antitrust fine. Quick refresher: lately, Europe’s been hard on big tech bizes - like Google. And says Google hasn’t made things fair for the biz’s competition. In recent times, Europe’s hit Google with two fines totaling up at over $7 billion. Now, they’re slapping the tech biz with a third fine of $1.7 billion. Speaking of which, Disney is throwing a party. Yesterday, the entertainment biz closed on a $71 billion deal for assets of Fox entertainment. This comes after Disney and Comcast were in a bidding war for these assets.
