What makes a good internship, the math behind the perfect color palette, and exploring gender

There’s math behind the perfect color combination

“Solarized—themes made for the popular MacOS code editor TextMate—color schemes are no accident. It reflects the obsessive attention to detail of its creator, Ethan Schoonover. ‘I didn't release it until I was 1,000 percent sure I loved all the colors and they were all dialed in mathematically,’ Schoonover says. ‘I had multiple monitors, some were color calibrated, others were deliberately messed up. Sometimes I showed my wife, who thought I was a little nuts.’” Coders rejoice.

Have an internship program? Here are some—unfortunate but necessary—reminders

AIGA Eye On Design reminds us all that simply paying interns isn’t nearly enough, and should definitely be table-stakes. “The world’s truly greatest internship involves generous professionals willing to make room in their busy calendars for young professionals over a period of time that allows for real learning to take place.” Say it louder for the people in the back.

A transmasculine gender-nonconforming person and transfeminine non-binary person nuzzling. All photos by Zackary Drucker/The Gender Spectrum Collection.

Broadly launches a gender-inclusive stock photo library

Pretty unbelievable to think that such a library doesn’t already exist. “Broadly’s Gender Spectrum Collection aims to help media better represent trans and non-binary people who are not necessarily defined by their gender identities, but rather as human beings with careers, relationships, talents, passions, and internal lives—people you see at the office, at school, in your home.”

Nest explores gender and identity in their stunning 14th issue

A magazine that explores gender non-conformity—photography to graphic design to writing considered. “Elżbieta Cybulska’s contribution, for example, profiles the female soldiers of Kurdistan in a series that challenges the stereotypes of women in the Middle East...James Gray pens their experience of self-discovery from a cis-gender male to a queer non-binary individual,” and so much more.

The kids of South Wales have some serious taste

We are kind of, sort of obsessed with this photo series. Don’t even want to give away too much—this one is better seen. Do yourself a favor and give ‘em a look.
