The Fledgling--Week of March 22, 2019

From Mother Megan:

We have now had two sessions of the Lenten Soup and Salad Series, and I am pleased to report that it has been going well.  The soup has been plentiful and tasty, the bread has been excellent and the salad has also been nutritious and yummy.

After we eat, we adjourn to the Nave, to discuss the Eucharist: what we do, why we do it, where it comes from, and what it means.  We are slowly moving through the Rite II service, answering questions and telling stories as we go.

For my part, I have really enjoyed researching the parts of the mass again, and talking about the theology of our space here at St. John's; pointing out the deep meaning behind the things we do so often that it can seem rote.  The Eucharist is one of those things that we often take for granted; that we assume we know all the ins and outs, yet every time we take the time to reexamine, we discover something new, some new aspect of God winking back at us.

Even if you can't make it on Wednesdays, next time you're in church, take a moment to reflect on the movements and the words of the Eucharist.  Ponder the generations upon generations who have done these things and said these words before us.  And see what new surprise appears for you.

If you have a submission to the Fledgling, send it to the office by Thursday morning for inclusion on Friday.  Bulletin announcements should be into the office by Wednesday morning.
  • If you know of someone who would like to receive the Fledgling, please send their email to the office.

Prayer for the week

Almighty God, you know that we have no power in ourselves to help ourselves: Keep us both outwardly in our bodies and inwardly in our souls, that we may be defended from all adversities which may happen to the body, and from all evil thoughts which may assault and hurt the soul; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Lots going on in Lent!
  • Wednesday evening program at 6:30, with soup and salad supper, followed by a discussion of the Eucharist: How and Why and Since When.  Join us!

  • Open Doors is a new effort spearheaded by the Vestry, to open the Sanctuary during the hours Loaves and Fishes serves.  We want our church to be a welcoming space for whoever needs to pray.  Would you like to volunteer to staff the Nave during this time?  Talk to Matthew Sanaker or Mtr Megan to sign up.

  • Don't forget to vote every day at Lent Madness! Learn about different saints, and cheer your favorite on to victory.

Ongoing Concerns:

Holy Land Pilgrimage!  In 2020, Mtr Megan will lead a pilgrimage to Israel/Palestine from January 29-February 10.  We will go to Jerusalem, Nazareth, Bethlehem, Galilee, and all the places we read about in the Gospels.  Come and see the land that formed our faith, and those who keep it alive today!  Email Mtr Megan for more information.

COFFEE HOUR We need people to sign up to host coffee hour after the 10:30 am service. It doesn't need to be elaborate, just an opportunity for parish fellowship and to welcome newcomers. A few parishioners/ families hosting together makes it even easier. Please consider signing up on the sheet on the bulletin board in the Parish House. Sara and Pam will happily give you pointers!

ADULT FORUM Our Adult Forum book study for Lent is a reading and discussion of "Short Stories by Jesus, The Enigmatic Parables of a Controversial Rabbi" by Amy-Jill Levine, published by Harper, 2014.

CHANCEL CHOIR welcomes new members as we prepare for Lent/ Holy Week/ Easter. We rehearse together Thursday evenings and Sunday mornings, and sing weekly in worship offering a variety of anthems, psalms, service settings and hymns. For more information, please speak with Organist Karen Hindenlang after any service.
