Spring has sprung!!! At least on the calendar. It's Jer.

Shianne has the details on what to do this weekend! That rundown is here.

Also, we take you inside Detroit’s newest beer hall, The Brakeman with pictures and an interview.

It’s opening Monday and we went down for an advanced peek and spoke with the partners from NoHo Hospitality, Joshua Pickard and Luke Ostrom on the podcast.

The Brakeman occupies a wedge-shaped building that was formerly a surface parking lot and abuts Parker’s Alley.
It turns out municipal recycling programs, including those here in Metro Detroit, have some very tough choices to make in the wake of official government actions by the People’s Republic of China — halfway around the world.

It’s so bad that our guest Joe Munem said that the city of Westland recently notified residents it has begun landfilling all the recyclable materials people put in their bins.

Here's an interesting deep dive.
A recent report by the St. Louis Dispatch is throwing cold water on the idea of a Major League Soccer team coming to Detroit.

A would-be ownership group made up of Pistons owner Tom Gores and Quicken Loans Founder Dan Gilbert want an MLS team, and their plan is to put that team in Ford Field. But MLS has said all along they want a soccer-specific outdoor stadium.

In an interview with the Dispatch, MLS commissioner Don Garber said:

“We think that in order for us to be successful in that city, we need a soccer-specific stadium. And the options that we’re presented with today are only at Ford Field.”

Garber also said that they’ve been in regular conversations with Detroit’s would-be team owners, and that Detroit is an important market for the league. But he says that MLS stills struggles with their stadium plan.
In other news, Sven highlights that real estate in Ferndale appears poised to ascend to a new realm of hyperspace, with two brand-new homes made of shipping containers hitting the market and listing for at least $400,000. Neither are in neighborhoods where that price can remotely be considered normal.

We talked about it a bit on our podcast a few days ago, then Sven wrote about it and the impact to Ferndale, and then the Freep did a piece on the houses this morning with a bunch of interior pictures.

And, people who live near Detroit’s popular commercial areas and entertainment venues have been feeling the parking pinch.

Specifically, out of city visitors coming and parking for free in neighborhoods, and then when the residents get home, there’s nowhere left for them to park.

To help deal with this, a new ordinance has been proposed to create a new, simpler process for residents to create residential parking permit zones on a block-by-block basis.

The ordinance, proposed by Councilmember Raquel Castañeda-López and Council President Pro-Tem Mary Sheffield, would require 60% of all residences to sign petitions in support of creating the residential parking permit zone. Once established, 50% of residents must sign up for the permit in order for the zone to become active.

The ordinance allows residents to apply for up to three passes and thirty annual visitor passes.

In addition, seniors and residents that receive a partial or complete property tax exemption will be eligible for a discount.

Parking zones aren’t a new thing in the U.S. or Michigan, but they may face some pushback in a place where the car is considered king.

A Look Inside The Beautiful Brakeman Beer Hall

The last piece of the new Shinola Hotel will open its doors Monday when the Brakeman starts pouring beers inside its new digs on the corner of John R and Farmer in downtown Detroit. A den of coyotes has taken up residence near downtown Detroit — specifically, in that weird no-man’s-land site of the old Brewster housing projects where I-75, I-375 and the spur to Gratiot Avenue converge.
