A MESSAGE FROM THE FOUNDER

Hello everyone I hope you enjoy this edition of our newsletter.
BARCS lovely staff have also added a little of my story and how BARC began .

Dear BARC friends,

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY is all about celebrating inspirational women -
Like BARC's founder Linda Buller.

This is her amazing story:
“Well let me first say, I had no idea, exactly WHAT I was doing or what my action would lead to. I had been picking up pups, the worst cases, for 5 years and taking them to my humble abode, and wished I didn’t have to see this awful situation, I wished I could just shut my eyes like thousands of others do.

The day, 15 years ago, I found an abandoned gallery. It was falling to bits, I could just see it all fixed with happy animals all being rehabilitated and smiling and playing,
so then I began to pray.

My income at the time came then from my small T.C.M. (traditional Chinese medicine) clinic, I had some regular patients, but when the bomb happened in 2002 I closed my door and was forced also to close the clinic. There were no patients, no tourists, and a lot of expats exited Bali as well.

An Australian girlfriend who had a restaurant in the beach area, called a few weeks later asking for paintings for the walls. I wasn’t interested. She insisted. She came up to my h to ouse and loaded up the truck, I just felt unable to care and just sat and watched the paintings leave my house. Before the paintings were even hung, someone came in and bought one for $1000.00. And then another person came in an d bought another $8000.00 worth of work.
I was amazed, so we were on our way.

We have been going now for coming up to 10 years and it’s an absolute miracle. We are not regularly funded by any institution, but we have been supported by generous individual people who see us worthy.”

And now, from one woman's action, currently we have 250 dogs in our care which are spreading around The Warriors Legacy Sanctuary, our BARC SafeHouse and BARC Serenity House our HQ in Ubud which also has a backpacker home stay, all dedicated to Saving the Bali Dogs.

Please visit us at our HQ in Ubud.
We need you to spread the word of BARC’s new initiatives so we can continue our village visits to educate vaccinate and neuter Bali Dogs.
We are grateful for all the help and appreciation and future journeys that we will undertake to help the Bali community and our Bali dogs.
Thank you all.

Barc Team.

VILLAGE DAY/MELALI KE DESA
BARC in ACTION!

So, on Wednesday, February 20, we held our 2nd " BARC Village Day' at Banjar Madangan, Kelod Village, Gianyar.

We held free dog sterilization, adoption and also education for children and the local community.
Gianyar's Department of Agricultural was present to provide the vaccinations to the community dogs and cats. It was more special because our Village Day this time was supported by the presence of 7 internship students from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Udayana University.

For this event, the Team managed to provide sterilization to 23 dogs consisting of 9 female dogs and 14 male dogs and there were 42 dogs that were successful in the vaccinated.

We are so ever thankful that this event went well and we thank all those who have helped in this event.

We are particular grateful for the financial support of Miss Karen Achurch of Rebuilding Rover in Adelaide, Australia, who has sponsored this event by holding fundraising through their clients 🙏 and The Bali Bandana Project for sponsoring this month's event .... a great big pawsome thank you.

And for the latest event from us in this early month, as part of our ongoing BARC village community program , last Sundays, a member of our team, Vet Ketut was up north in Banjar Singaraja to neuter 6 dogs and 5 cats.. This is totally pawsome especially more locals take a part of our Village Day. We do wish that this event could continue and keep rocking.
Please always support us. Thank you also for all of your love.

PS: Here are some pictures of us doing and enjoying this event.

SOME QUESTIONS THAT YOU MIGHT WONDER WHILE WANDERING IN BALI!!

Essential ' need to know ' answers to questions
while travelling in and around Bali

You are now in Bali, and the first thing that hits you is the amount of free roaming ' stray ' dog. Reality check these are not ' strays ' . They belong to someone. It is pretty normal to see dogs on the road scavenging for food in Bali. At present Bali is overpopulated with dogs, the majority un neutered, un vaccinated. The normal local solution to unwanted dogs for people is to dump their puppies and dogs.
So let’s move on to some circumstances that you maybe thinking about, if you see strays or pups on the road. Here they are some suggestions of what to do…

1.    “I see dogs on the road and I think they do not have owner, what should we do?”

So, let’s narrow this statement into two parts. First situation - the dogs are okay, and healthy?. The second, the dogs are malnourished ,sick/injured or have a serious skin condition?

      If the dogs are healthy, let them be. Some stray dogs belong to community or Banjar or neighborhood. So they are not really alone, they just do not have any proper home or owners who can take care of them properly. So if the dogs are healthy and doing just fine in their area, let them be. If you feel so sorry for the dogs, you can feed them. You can buy some dog food and feed them on the road. Bali dogs are tough so you don’t have to worry abut them living on the streets.

But if they are puppies, please take them to the Vet and get them vaccinations. ASK for foster parents for them on Facebook..

    If the dogs are sick/injured or have a serious skin condition, you can note the location, call a vet, and also if the dog is friendly and you can approach or touch the dogs, cover it with blanket and take them to a VET.
If you can’t approach them or you are afraid, ask locals/people around for help or you post the dog’s situation on some dog communities on Facebook, you can ask for help this way!

2.    “I am not living here, what should I do with the dogs?”

So, let us say that you found a dog, you took him to a vet and got him some vaccinations already, but you could not keep him because you were not living here. You are about to leave Bali.
    You can post this situation again on some dog communities on Facebook. Hopefully someone can adopt or foster him. But if no one can adopt him, and you only have one day left in Bali, and you are in panic now, it is not wrong of you to release him back to the road. If he is very ill of course you can arrange with a vet for his continued care.

3.    “I don’t have money. What Should I do to pay the bills?”

You rescued an injured dog and you took him to a Vet and the bills got you worried?
Well you can start a fundraising for this dog. You can start with "mycause", KitaBisa, Facebook fundraiser or you can post again on some dog communities on Facebook. Write your story and ask for help.

Generally, you could call some animals/dog foundations to help you rescue.
But some foundations are overloaded and do not have enough space left. With so many rescued dogs and puppies, need a place.
Unfortunately, we cannot expect all animals rescues groups here in Bali to help as many are absolutely full, so it's really up to you if you have found a pup.
So individuals who find a pup can still do something for the puppy as explained as above as rescuing is much more than just picking it up and taking it to a dog rescue.

Not all foundation or animal welfare can help them, but as an individual, we all can help, this is why BARC is now working in the community to teach and help the people to take care of their own dogs in their area.....community assistance is the "FACE OF BARC" moving forward this year.

Regards,
BARC TEAM.
