Hi <<First Name>>

Strap yourselves in!
In true North Shore tradition our fate is going to be decided on the last playing day of the season!
Our game is evenly poised after a tight tussle on day one with Waitakere. An extremely flat deck meant it took a bit longer than we would have liked to bowl them out but the onus is now on us to advance the game now.
There are a lot of permutations within this game due to the tightness of the race between ourselves and Eden Roskill.
However, the reality is that our fate is in our hands. If we can get an outright win we will determine where we play next season.
The team is doing everything in its power to prepare for this weekend and we will be representing the club the same way we have all season, with pride and an aggressive approach.

We do the Maths

Or how the Premiers can Win

Starting the final match of the season (Round 8), North Shore had a 5 pt lead over Eden Roskill 99 - 94.

During the Round 8 matches Eden Roskill had Ellerslie out for 97. Eden Roskill then scored 133.
So, Eden Roskill collected 3 bonus points for bowling Elleslie out, then another 10 for a first innings lead but received no bonus point for batting. Currently they have 107 points.
Ellerslie, in their second innings are 71/4.
However, an Eden Roskill Outright Win is a probability.
So, Eden Roskill could end up with a total of 115 - 116 at the most.
Meanwhile, in the North Shore game, Waitakere were out for 188 and North Shore are currently 53/3.
North Shore are sitting on 102 points, five behind Eden Roskill.
The first target for North Shore is to get a first innings lead - 10 points plus one batting point - a total of 113.
If Eden Roskill win outright and North Shore only have a 1st innings win that's not enough. Shore would end up second.

So, to win the Tom Hellaby Trophy and promotion to the Hedley Howath Championship next year, Shore need to win outright this Saturday at Te Atatu Park.

No problem boys. You see, we believe you can do it.

Premiers

If North Shore thought they’d be able to simply run away with the match, they would be disappointed, as Waitakere’s batting display showed renewed grit.

Shozib Mirza and Rajat Kumar made a solid start to the innings, and while the North Shore bowlers would notch up plenty of maidens through the innings, wickets didn’t fall quickly.

Brad Cachopa and Jared Challis took Waitakere through to lunch at 89/3, and Cachopa would once again marshal the lower order through the second session.

Although Cachopa would fall to Ronnie Hira just prior to tea, Ben Lister and Rob Evans-Moore would add valuable runs.

Twelve overs into the third session North Shore were probably grinding their teeth until Tendai Chitongo removed them both, Waitakere making 188 all out.

Thoughts of a fast chase likely went out of the window for North Shore at about Lister’s third ball, when he dismissed Stephen Baard for 0.

Graeme Beghin navigated through the remainder of the overs, although Todd Wannan would pick up two wickets before the close of play. North Shore will start next week on 53/3.

Reserves

The Reserve lads enjoyed a pleasant outing at the construction site that is Shore Road.
Perhaps the tranquil sounds of drills and trucks reversing calmed the nerves of the players, or maybe it was the change in warm up routine bringing back an old favourite in touch footy.
Whatever it was, Shore played a lovely brand of cricket. Being sent into bat on a deck rated 3rd worst in Auckland Cricket, Shore used hype man Elliot and Andy Strain who was keen to open with Shore needing someone brave enough to take up the mantle. Things went nicely with Andy Strain playing a lovely collection of shots into the "reverse v" which was oddly vacant of a fine leg much to the chagrin of a vocal Parnell coach.

Shore kept the score ticking along nicely with a 30 and 40 from Andy and Raz with the younger Strain, Matty batting patiently for an ascetically looking 18. Malav took to the long handle for 18 before being caught trying to place a ball rather than sending it into orbit, highlighting an apparent weakness again short pitched spin bowling and half volleys as four wickets fell to the left arm spinner.
As Syme departed bowled by a seamer "not doing anything" in the words of Angus Frew, things were looking a bit pear shaped. But Frew showed why he is the best number 10 in Auckland Cricket and maybe it was his own talent making the bowler seem innocuous but the partnership that followed will be fondly remembered amongst the Angus's as one of the best as they put on a roaring 36 runs. It contained two of the biggest 4's ever seen, and had it been played at Devonport they might have found a stray ball on the beach, they were that monstrous. For what is probably the only time in his batting career Angus Nicoll had a long off stationed for him. The momentum shifted and soon the opposition chat dried up, as they became visibly distraught at what was unfolding.

When the wicket fell there was only a small celebration as the damage had been done. The last wicket falling with the score on 189, a score as niggly as the sandflies that plagued the field.
Frew not satisfied with his personal best reserve score decided to take some wickets and end the day taking a cheeky 3fer bowling some absolute peaches. Rory thought he would snag one too, emboldened by his first reserve wicket the week before. A pretty solid performance all things considered, leaving the game nicely balanced for day 2 the coming Saturday as Shore will seek to pluck out the remaining 6 wickets happy the better Parnell batsmen are back in the shed with the score at 95.

3rd Grade

The froth levels were high as the thirds returned to the hallowed fortress of Devonport with the privilege of playing on the number 1 for the final match of the season.
With the championship on the line the boys turned up zoned in and confident of taking down Howick-Pakuranga.

Liam ‘Tosser’ Jacobs was in fine form, winning his second coin flip in a row, his first streak of the season, and choosing to field on a hot and humid March day. The squad emerged from the changing rooms and it really felt like the team were one solid unit ready to inflict some early destruction on the Howick batting line up. With a thick and slow outfield the plan was to keep tight in the infield and take out early opportunities.

With the fearsome duo of Zac ‘12 on the trot’ Watson and Manaia ‘Beamer’ Harris into the attack, alongside top quality efforts in the field, the top order began to wilt. Going into the first drinks 30/3 and then the second drinks 55/6 the destruction was regular and precise. Watto taking 2 and Manaia 1 at great economies really setting up Lewis ‘The Wicket Machine’ Goodwin who took another 4 and the ever consistent Alex Pasco taking another 2 well earned wickets. Eventually Shore dispatching Howick for 101.

Going into the batting innings, the failings of the previous week to chase down a low total against Suburbs were at the front of the mind.
The top and middle order knowing not to take anything for granted. A solid start to the chase as James Ferris freed his arms as usual before departing for 27 off 11 balls saw Mac Chapman make a triumphant return to the club and the number 3 slot, unfortunately having his off stump taken off by a straight one and leaving Shore 55-2, a very similar story to the week before at Suburbs.

As mentioned in The Boundary last week, the ability of the team to learn from mistakes of the previous week and come back firing has been the strongest attribute of the season, with the game in the balance Ash Abraham playing a controlled knock was joined by Fynbar ‘Mini Guns’ Heron. A solid 29 run partnership brought the team within sight of the total before Ash was dismissed for 40 with the total at 84. Coming to the crease was the explosive and short ball loving Logan Clinch who swiftly moved to 46 from 28 balls, with 5 boundaries and 3 over the ropes - including one into the clubrooms. With Fynbar moving along nicely at the other end, Logan was dismissed after a swift 63 run partnership, leaving the team 147/4 and in control of the match.

From here the Mini Gun Heron took on the scoring role with support of the middle order, eventually getting to a fabulously balanced 71 from 96 balls. A tidy 20 from Goodwin and Captain Jacobs 17 not out leaves Shore at 250/7 and in a very strong position to set a large total for Howick to overcome.

In the box seat to take an outright win, the thirds go into the final day of cricket of the season with a looking to put the final nail in the coffin and earn the much vaunted promotion. Forecast is for large downpours of the Wild Buck going late into the evening.

New Zealand Cricket Awards

Members from the North Shore Devonport Hammer Hardware pose with one of the premier awards for the night, the Bert Sutcliffe Medal, given for outstanding service to cricket and received by Ewen Chatfield.

A group of seven Y7 cricketers were invited along to New Zealand Cricket Awards at SkyCity Grand.

Part of an Auckland Cricket initiative, the lads from North Shore Devonport Hammer Hardware were among 40 children who got a behind the scenes tour of the awards room, stepped on stage, held trophies and lined the red carpet for autographs, photos and chats with Black Caps and White Ferns.

The boys were invited by Auckland Cricket, thanks to their coach Mark Davies and the team’s good spirit throughout the season.

It was great to see the Shore boys there at the entrance to the awards night, welcoming their idols!
