LSU AD Alleva on embattled MBB HC Wade after the Tigers' NCAA Tourney win yesterday, "I don’t know how deep this goes. That’s the problem, and Will’s refused to talk to us. That’s the hardest part for me. I wish he’d come in and just tell the truth. Just tell me what went on. I can handle the truth even if it’s bad." Interim HC Benford: "We’re not going to worry about the outside noise. We’ve got good character kids. … We’re going to control what we can control." (link); Kansas Chancellor Girod indicates he's not thought about suspending any Jayhawks MBB coaches at any point despite the programs connections to allegations in the MBB-FBI developments. Girod: "There was discussion with the NCAA about how to approach it, but they asked us to hold off and do it with them. (The NCAA) said they wanted to be part of that, and we said we would comply." Board of Regents Chair Mullin: "If I had a coach involved, that would be a whole different story, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. [...] Two years for something his guardian did? I don’t know how you manage it, but it does bother me that, I think, (the NCAA) overreacted in some cases." (link)
SBJ's Smith & Ourand on a big scoop once again, report the Pac-12 is looking for $750M as its bid book for the "NewCo" entity that would operate its revenue-generating verticals hits the streets. Notably, "NewCo reported an EBITDA of $286M last year, according to the bid book. The book does not outline a timetable to complete a deal, but sources indicated the process will unfold over the coming weeks." Minimum investment is $100M, timeline commitment is 25 years, investments paid upfront with an unclear rate of return, terms could vary per investor & of the $700M, $650M would be distributed to member institutions with the other $50M going toward the operation of NewCo. (link); Three former Pac-12 FB officials, including CFP instant replay official Gallagher, inked a letter to the league office in pushback to the public positioning & review of the conference's FB officiating structure & performance. Gallagher says VP for Officiating Coleman & General Counsel Dixon walked in his booth multiple times during games "to ask about replay decisions and sideline conduct situations." More. (link)
Georgia Tech AD Stansbury says the NCAA investigation into his MBB program does not impact HC Pastner, "Josh was not named in the notice of allegations, and there was no new information than what has already been reported, and so this in no way affects Josh. We’re just looking forward to getting through this process and being able to move on from it." Stansbury also believes Pastner's build of the Tech program is on track, "We’ve got some key parts of the team in place, and the idea is to take those kids and we’ll be adding a few more here in the spring where we have some needs. But then the nature of the program is developing these players. And I think that’s what we’ve seen over the last three years." (link)
West Coast Conference Commissioner Nevarez with the long profile treatment from The Athletic's Lombardi as she's completed her first year leading the league. Loyola Marymount Prez Snyder reviews how Nevarez handled a super thorny issue from the jump, the potential exit of Gonzaga, "One of the challenges was the many parties who had to be appeased. For an institution like ours, to keep Gonzaga required that in the future, we receive less money. That leaves a prospect of the league betting on its top horses, and that’s going to make it harder for the rest of the horses to engage in the race going forward. That was my greatest concern. On the other hand, if you lose Gonzaga — well, now nobody is going to show up at the race park. So, how do you broker that conundrum? I love how Gloria found a way. She found a common pathway. Kept conversations open. Got us talking with one another. She kept everyone calm." Nevarez examines the WCC's rebranding effort & its constant focus on hoops. More Snyder: "Here, we don’t have these battles about academics versus athletics, which are some of the silliest battles being waged on America’s college campuses. When athletics rises, the renown of the institution rises, which pulls the academics forward. When the academics succeed, the power of the alumni has a greater impact on the world, which helps athletics succeed. This group of presidents understand that all we do is intertwined." More. (link)
UCLA Men's Soccer HC Salcedo has resigned in connection to his alleged role in Operation Varsity Blues. Salcedo led the Bruins for 15 seasons winning 182 games, six Pac-12 titles & advancing to the NCAA Tournament on 14 occasions. Salcedo is accused of taking $200K worth of bribes to get two perspective student-athletes into school. (link)
The Carousel: Alabama AD Byrne is reportedly working on buyout terms with MBB HC Johnson with finality expected today. (link); George Washington AD Vogel goes with Siena MBB HC Christian to take over on Foggy Bottom. (link); Former Iowa State HC & potentially the next Nebraska boss Hoiberg sidestepped questions about the Huskers as he watched NCAA Tourney play in Des Moines, "I'm just sitting here and enjoying the game." (link); Washington MBB HC Hopkins inks an extension that could keep him with the Huskies through 2024-25. Worth $17.5M, staring with a $2.5M base next season. (link); Tennessee WBB HC Warlick on her job security, "I’m not worried about it. I can’t worry about something I can’t control. All I can control is getting this basketball team ready for the next game, and that’s UCLA." (link); Penn State AD Barbour is working with Ventura Partners on her WBB HC search. (link); Collegiate Sports Associates is assisting with Richmond's WBB search.
Missouri: The Missourian's multi-part series on Mizzou's move to the SEC continues with a look at how tourism tax dollars haven't seen much of an increase since SEC teams started coming to town. "As a matter of fact, during three of the six reported years in the SEC era, the nine nonfootball months have generated more of a hotel revenue increase from the previous year than the three football months did — showing that tourism has not spiked during football season any more than it has at other times of the year." (link); Enrollment from SEC states is up & enrollment from Big 12 states hasn't substantially dropped. Obviously other campus issues have impacted overall enrollment trend lines in Columbia. (link); Executive Assoc. AD Moore discusses the Tigers' fundraising push, including a Big Hairy Audacious Goal of 18,039 members for the Tiger Scholarship Fund, "There’s a lot of unrealistic things that happen in sports. That’s why they play the game, right?" (link)
Lafayette AD Freeman squares away more organizational structure for the Leopards as Deputy AD McKittrick, Assoc. AD for Facilities & Operations Foster & Senior Director of Communications Morse are now part of her senior leadership team. There's also a new greater leadership team comprising of 10 others. McKittrick's role goes from mainly internally facing to now including significant external responsibility. Freeman: "The leadership team creates a core unit to assist with moving key strategies along. These moves are timely as they relate to the evolution of the athletic strategic plan, allowing for greater communication and broader participation. It's working. People feel more invested." (link)
Clemson Deputy AD Neff was a guest on the Sports Creatives Podcast hosted by Baylor Assoc. Director of Digital Strategy & Content Development Hicks. Neff touched on the synergy between executive leadership for the Tigers, the overall university & the content engine in Athletics. Neff: "Involving creatives on the front end of a project adds a diverse element to the meeting because the way they think is a little different than the rest of the staff. […] There’s a whole heck of a lot that goes into just a three minute video and my team knows that much better than I do. I'll share some thoughts or ideas but don't want to come across as too onerous to the process or the amount of working being requested." Lots more. (link)
More Personnel: UNLV AD Reed-Francois fills the final spot on the NCAA Division I Baseball Committee. She joins peers Altier (Stetson), Bobinski (Purdue), Del Conte (Texas), Tanner (South Carolina), Blank (Elon), Buddie (Furman), Karlgaard (Rice), Shove (Assoc. (link)
How much do coaches actually matter? This 25 minute audio clip (transcript included) from Counterpoints/The Sports Analytics Podcast from MIT Sloan Management Review answers just that. A study by University of Chicago researchers Berry and Fowler found that "Coaches across basketball, football, baseball, and hockey account for something like 20-30% of the variation in their team’s success." The results estimate that going from a bad to a good coach in the NBA could get you 14 extra wins per season. "Coaching effects [are] big in the NFL but they appear to be even bigger at the level of college football" with recruiting impact the differentiator here. Of note, "We do not make any direct effort to explicitly measure player quality." Lots here. (link)
"I’ve said it from the day I got here: This would be a season to watch, to learn, to figure out, and then we’re going to meet after the season is over and talk about how we are going to reach our goal we want, and that’s to have a championship-level program. That hasn’t changed. That’s been the direction we were going to take from Day 1. We’ll definitely have those talks." That's St. John's AD Cragg as he settles into the chair. Cragg declines to offer specifics of what he already sees as ways the improve the Johnnies, including those for the MBB program. Overall: "We have a lot of work to do — across the board, as an institution, as an athletics department, as a basketball program. (link)

BodyArmor is the official sports drink of the NCAA Tournament in a deal that covers 90 national championships. Former NBA star Bryant is the third largest investor in the company and the designer of the marketing campaign being launched by the company during March Madness. Bryant on the campaign: "We are speaking to the outdated messages that have been used in the past. Those things were all good, but there is a newer way to do things, and that is the tonality of the campaign. Thank you to Gatorade. We appreciate your services. We’ll take it from here." Founder Repole, who also cofounded Vitaminwater- and Smartwater-maker Glaceau: "The goal is to be the number one sports drink in 2025. The dream is to be on every sideline, college, high school and pro." BodyArmor's retail sales doubled in 2018 to $400M and market share has risen from 1% in 2016 to 8.6% currently. Coca-Cola invested $300M in the company last year for 15% of the company in a deal that valued BodyArmor at $2B. (link)
Nike beat sales estimates by 7% in its third quarter as both domestic (+7%) & China (+19%) were up. Swoosh CEO Parker pointed to digital business growing by 36% & reaching $1B for the first time ever. […] We have to be competitive at every level. I think there’s a great opportunity for us." (link)

(link); 2018 Q3 pay TV viewership shows continued declines for ages 2-64. Former Amazon Studios Head of Strategy & key analyst Ball, "This chart is why I've never understood how media/telecom execs say they were caught off guard by decline of Pay-TV. It has been crazily linear, consistent, predictable. They should say is they were surprised that the trend of decline didn't suddenly/randomly stop and reverse." (link); Deloitte finds consumers are tiring of trying to navigate multiple bundle options. (link)
