                                                       Success

Good morning dear reader & welcome to my world this week. My topic today is around the apparent constant quest to achieve faster results. I believe this is a trap.

Many get so obsessed on the goal we forget it is the system which matters. Some people, including many leaders get so obsessed with the outcome they overlook the repetitions required to get there. They become so focused on the short-term results they forget to build the long term habits which make the real difference.

However, there are a few strategies which can actually accelerate the results you enjoy without ignoring the importance of building better habits. These include:

“The best way to change long-term behaviour is with short-term feedback.” The more immediate the feedback you get, the quicker you can make adjustments to your behaviour. The most fundamental aspect of a new habit is awareness. If you are not aware of your habits, how can you expect to change them? This is why feedback is so important. Faster feedback leads to faster results.  1
To obtain the best productivity is to eliminate the things derailing your ability to achieve your goals as one would aspire. If you live a life with fewer distractions, it becomes much easier to take effective action.

The Pareto Principle, often called the 80-20 rule, is a commonly shared idea suggesting 80 percent of the results in a given endeavour come from 20 percent of the work.

Most of the time, people bring this rule up as a way to point out you should focus on this top 20 percent. “Put all of your energy into the things providing the biggest benefit!” This is excellent advice, but what we often forget is, even if you know what the top 20 percent is, you still need to avoid the pitfall of wasting time on the remaining 80 percent of tasks.

In my opinion, our environment is the greatest success there is. If you live in an environment which typically points you toward the right decision & if you surround yourself with people who make your behaviour seem normal, then you will find success is almost an afterthought.

The world around us shapes our behaviour. Consider the home you live in, for example. There are many things built into your home, which shape our behaviour in small ways. Every environment promotes some behaviours & prevents others. The key is to be in an environment supporting the results you want to achieve.

The people & places surrounding us fill our days with little triggers to make our habits easier to follow or harder to build. Are you fighting your environment to make change happen? Or does your environment make your new behaviour effortless?

If your skills in a particular area are better, then making progress will be easier. For example, it is far easier to become an overnight success in basketball if you are 7 feet tall rather than if you are 5 feet tall.

I still think overnight success is a myth. There's no way to avoid one simple fact: you have to put in the work. Interestingly, following an article I read this week, & my message really today dear reader is; “something has changed around digital transformation in New Zealand & it is a step backwards. Data tells a concerning story & chief executives have lost confidence in their organisation to actually deliver digital transformation. Perhaps more concerning is existing leadership are not fully equipped to oversee or deliver the transformation.  2
Scary stuff I suggest… More to follow, I am sure…

Thank you for taking the time to be with me once again. I hope my journey may encourage you also. This is Kenn Butler in Paradise, Nelson, with my best wishes for another week… I look forward to being with you all again soon.
