Message from the President

Dear NMEA supporters,

Happy Spring! Here in the still-chilly Northeast, osprey are arriving to their summer nests and whales are on the move—positive signs for this flip-flop-loving gal!

Like the seeds and bulbs that are undoubtedly germinating beneath the soil, a lot is happening behind the scenes here at NMEA. In the coming months, we will unveil both a new website and new, modernized format for Current: The Journal of Marine Education. The NSTA Liaison Committee is preparing for our “Whale of a Share-A-Thon” at NSTA 2019 in St. Louis this April, where NMEA Chapters and Member Organizations will share fun and engaging ideas to use in your classroom or center—please stop by if you are attending the conference! The Scholarship and Expanding Audiences Committees are reviewing applications to bring new and established members to our NMEA 2019 Conference in New Hampshire. Our Ocean Literacy Committee has created a new PowerPoint for members to use to teach others about this important content. The International Committee is connecting with leaders from other marine education associations around the globe, while the Student Engagement Committee seeks to create new opportunities for networking and learning for our student members. Of course, our 2019 Conference Committee is abuzz with planning for a fun and productive #NMEA19 at the University of New Hampshire.

In addition to our usual activities, the NMEA Board has passed a strong budget for this year, which will seek to support our chapters and committees to do more of our work of “making known the world of water.”  This funding will support many new initiatives for our organization, so right now is a fantastic time to join or become more active on an NMEA committee! To do so, simply log in to your account and go to Groups > Committees on the left sidebar to see a list of committees. Go to the page of the committee(s) that interest you, and click on “Join Group.” We need your help to advance our mission and expand our reach!

I hope you all have a great spring, and I look forward to seeing you at NMEA19!

Best,

Meghan E. Marrero, EdD - NMEA President
Explore NMEA Committees

The National Marine Educators Association invites you to engage in hands-on activities and take home resources for your classroom. Discover how you can become involved in both ocean and freshwater initiatives from local and national organizations to promote ocean and climate literacy.

On the first day of the NSTA conference, NMEA sponsors a series of presentations, all in one location and all by NMEA members. The day starts with our Whale of a Share-a-Thon—an opportunity for NMEA chapters to promote their regional organizations and provide formal and informal science educators resources and activities for all grade levels. The Share-a-Thon is followed by a track of sessions by NMEA members that are related to marine and aquatic education.

The Gulf of Maine Marine Education Association is proud to host the National Marine Educators Association Annual Conference, July 21-25, 2019 at the University of New Hampshire campus in Durham, NH.

As you've come to expect, this NMEA conference will offer a variety of opportunities. During the day, attend a full program highlighting the latest trends and research in marine education. Learn from local researchers who have been studying the Gulf of Maine, learning from its history to protect its future.

Then, in the evening, explore both Portsmouth, NH (one of the nation's oldest cities, filled with vibrant restaurants and shops) and Rye, NH (home to the Seacoast Science Center, where we will be enjoying a full lobster bake).

Complete your conference experience by exploring the beauty of New Hampshire and Maine on one of our field trips. Anticipated trips include visits to Shoals Marine Laboratory, kayaking in our Great Bay, a whale watch cruise, tours of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard (established in 1800 and still operational today), and sampling cuisine from the New England culinary scene.

SHARE YOUR IDEAS, LESSONS, or RESEARCH in Marine Education!

The editors of Current: The Journal of Marine Education are seeking articles for upcoming general issues. We hope to review and publish articles on topics related to marine education. We seek original manuscripts that describe research, lessons, resources, or strategies for teaching marine and aquatic lessons to a variety of audiences, including science, art, literature, and maritime history.

Our next general issue of Current will be published in the fall; the due date for submitting articles will be May 31, 2019. Potential authors should look out for a NEW submission system!

For information on submitting articles to Current, please visit our Guide for Contributors.

Ocean Literacy

It takes one person with passion to create change. Nancy Richardson, one of the earliest members of NMEA, brought together a community of NMEA educators and partners to share ocean literacy principles with colleagues who are involved in Tall Ships America ‘Adventure and Education Under Sail’ at the recent Summit for Ocean Literacy Under Sail.
