Making Progress on the new Bus Barn!

This week at the construction site, we've seen several areas of progress that we want to share with you.

First, the siding has begun on the bus barn itself, along with furlim cross supports along the roof beams.

There is also a trench that extends from the new bus barn over the Spartan Stadium, for the gas and water lines.

Finally, we're seeing some serious muddiness behind the existing bus barn, as catch basins are installed, and prep work begins for a new parking lot.

In the Life Skills Class, the students have been working on a fundraising promotion where they will begin selling Laffy Taffy ropes in the cafeteria during high school lunches for $1 each.

The monies raised will be helping an area non-profit organization, 4 Paws for Ability

4 Paws for Ability enriches the lives of children with disabilities by training and placing quality, task-trained service dogs. This provides increased independence for the children, and assistance to their families. And 4 Paws also works with veterans from recent conflicts who’ve lost the use of their limbs or their hearing while in active combat. Click here to learn more.

Artists of Italy and France Trip

Folks - the trip was a success!  Our art trip, over spring break, to France and Italy exposed students to art, culture and language. During the trip travelers visited Rome, Florence and Paris. In each city we saw lots of famous artwork and got to do some of our own art in workshops. We visited museums and strolled the streets to experience real Italian and Parisian life. One of the things that students learned was how to navigate both cities and metros; this alone was a big step for some who had never tried this before. Artwork and architecture was everywhere and students saw how art has played such a huge role in our society.  They also implemented their language skills from foreign language classes each day. Seeing our students recall information about works of art or use French to talk to locals was amazing. They applied their skills in real life and saw how important and freeing their education can be. Mentalities were changed and horizons broadened.  We hope that students now have the confidence to be active global citizens. Check out just a few photos of our students enjoying their time abroad!

Spring driving safety tips -  use extra caution at bus stops:

According to the Federal Highway Administration, rain contributed to 46 percent of all weather-related crashes between 2005 to 2014, and wet pavement in general accounted for 73 percent. With this in mind, professional school transportation staff need to focus on new safety and awareness tips.

Driving preparedness:
  • Slow down, drive carefully and increase your stopping distance when it's raining.
  • Don’t underestimate the depth of water on the roadway. If you cannot see the pavement, do not attempt to drive through the water. One foot of water will make some vehicles float. Two feet of water can sweep vehicles away, including SUVs and pickups. Even more dangerous is the fact that flooding conditions can undermine the roadbed and sweep portions of the pavement away.
  • Watch for bad road conditions. Winter weather produces potholes and other driving obstacles and remember puddles can hide potholes.
  • Be alert for hydroplaning (when tires lose contact with the road), which will cause your vehicle to feel like it is floating on water. If this occurs, remove pressure from the accelerator, avoid turning the wheel, and gradually slow down. To avoid hydroplaning, slow down, turn off cruise control, and avoid sudden braking and turns.
  • Spring brings bicycle riders out of hibernation. Cyclists in the roadway can make traffic maneuvers, such as right-hand turns more difficult and dangerous.
  • Beware of reduced stopping ability when pavement is wet or has standing water.  Anticipate traffic being unable to stop for student pick-ups or drop-offs.
  • Rain on mirrors can reduce image quality, and rain gear can reduce students’ ability to see, so use extra caution at bus stops. Remember safety is the priority-the schedule is not.

ELEMENTARY DAYTON DRAGONS MVP's

Fourth and fifth graders in Waynesville Elementary have spent the past few weeks participating in the Dayton Dragons MVP program.  This program is offered by the Dragons as an incentive tool to learn and achieve for students in area schools.  Classroom teachers worked together to choose five students per homeroom who exemplified outstanding citizenship traits such as honesty, strong work ethic, kindness, helpfulness, and compassion and respect for others.  Being limited to five per classroom made choosing our MVP's extremely difficult, as we have so many deserving students in our classes!  Those receiving the Dayton Dragons MVP awards for fourth grade were:

  • Ms. Ferguson's Homeroom:  Ross Barrett, Ava Bridgman, Kara Brown, Lola Bulach, and Dean Burgess
  • Mrs. Holland's Homeroom:  Baya Dixie, Ryley Ellis, Max Frizzell, Jackson Garner, and Molly Hatch
  • Mrs. Rasey's Homeroom:  Maya Hoppe, Steven Isaac, Dillon Kirk, Kate Lundy, and Savannah Patterson
  • Miss Walker's Homeroom: Walter Shelhamer, Audrey Smith, Stetson Stockton, Mya Wenzler, and Bella Williamson

Congratulations to these students, who each received tickets to a future Dragons game, a special certificate, and will receive a Dragons MVP hat upon arrival at the game!

What is the Seal of Biliteracy?

This year, Wayne Local School is offering for the first time: The Seal of Biliteracy. The Seal of Biliteracy is an award given by our school in recognition of students who have studied and attained proficiency in two or more languages by high school graduation.

Why is the Seal of Biliteracy Important?

The Seal of Biliteracy provides evidence of world language skills that are attractive to future employers and college admission offices. Also, a notation can be made on the student’s transcript and a seal can be given on their high school diploma, marking their achievement.

Wayne Local schools is using a nationally known company called Avant. Students and their families will purchase their assessment from Avant’s online store, and our staff here at Wayne Local will proctor and administer their assessment for them.

If there are any questions about The Seal of Biliteracy, please contact:

Warren County Crisis Text Line:
Crises aren't "9 to 5" happenings. They sometimes come on when it's not easy to pickup a phone and call someone.  But you can text for help at any time.  Chat with a trained person by texting "4hope" to 741741.  That person will help you de-escalate and can offer information about local resources where you can find in-person help if needed.

The Crisis Text Line is always there for you, 24/7.  Just send a message (text 4hope to 741741.

Wayne Local Schools is expanding its services with The Education Connection (TEC) to include a Safety/Bully Tip Line.  When you witness verbal, written, physical, or electronic abuse, speak up!  If students hear or see suspicious behavior from another student, they should not ignore it.  We encourage all students to report any concerns about another student or the safety and security of Wayne Local School District.
Anyone can report anonymously a bullying/safety issue by calling the TEC tip line at (513) 855-4350 option 7 or by going online at waynelocal.tipline.info.   The tip line will also allow you to choose an incident number so that you can receive an update on the status or provide new information for this incident and still remain ANONYMOUS.

The information will be immediately forwarded to the proper authority.  All reports are taken very seriously.
There are posters displayed in all buildings with tip line information to remind students to always adopt the mindset of “if you see something or know something, say something.”

WELLNESS NEWS

Tips for a Better Night of Sleep

Here are a few tips for getting a better night of sleep:

  • Install room-darkening shades and turn down the thermostat to create an ideal room for sleeping that is dark and cool.
  • Neutralize sounds such as a snoring partner, barking dog, or vehicles outside with some type of white noise.
  • Strengthen your mental association between your bedroom and sleep by keeping computers, TVs, and work materials out of your bedroom.
  • Go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, including weekends.
  • Create a bedtime ritual such as taking a warm bath or reading a book.
  • Keep pets out of your bedroom (or at least off your bed) if they wake you during the night.
  • Consider using a pillow between your legs for better alignment of the hips and to reduce pain on the lower back which could wake you.Back-sleepers may consider a pillow under their knees.
  • Turn the lights down low before bed, which signals your brain to produce melatonin, the hormone that brings on sleep.
  • Avoid heavy foods late in the day, which can cause indigestion and/or heartburn. If you are hungry before bed, consider a light snack with complex carbs and dairy such as cereal with milk or crackers and cheese.
  • If you are a clock-watcher at bedtime, consider putting your alarm in a drawer, under the bed, or turn it away from view.
  • Avoid beverages within two hours of bedtime to prevent middle-of-the-night bathroom trips, which often make it difficult to get back to sleep quickly. If you frequent the bathroom at night, keep a nightlight in the bathroom to avoid turning on bright lights at night.
  • Create a to-do list for the following day so you can help to free your mind at bedtime.

If you experience ongoing sleeplessness, you should get checked by a doctor.  Insomnia could be a symptom of other underlying problems, such as depression, acid reflux, arthritis, or asthma.
