National 
Chinese students studying abroad up 8.8%

The number of Chinese students studying abroad reached 662,100 in 2018, up 8.8% from 2017, the Ministry of Education (MoE) said on 27 March. Over 90% of the students funded their own studies while the rest were sponsored by public funding. The number of Chinese students returned after graduating overseas has increased by 8% from 2017.
 

China issues plan to develop world-class higher vocational colleges

Following the vocational education reform plan that was published in February this year, the MoE and Ministry of Finance issued another plan to develop world-class higher vocational colleges. According to the plan, 50 higher vocational colleges and 150 disciplines will be given priority for development. By 2022, China aims to see significant improvement in its higher vocational education system.
 

MoE publish 2019 budget: study abroad funding increase

The MoE published its 2019 budget on 2 April. The plan noted an overall increase of  6.6% in government funding compared to 2018, as well as a 36% increase in funding for outbound study abroad. Funding to support inbound study abroad also saw an increase of 18% as a result of rising number of international students coming to China.  


China to encourage enterprises to work with vocational education institutes

The MoE issued a guideline on 3 April encouraging enterprises to collaborate with vocational education institutions. The government will offer a range of support to such enterprises, especially in the fields of modern agriculture, smart manufacturing, high-end equipment and aged care.
 

Chinese colleges include AI major to boost research

35 universities in China have been approved to develop courses majoring in Artificial Intelligence (AI). In April 2018, the MoE issued an AI promotion plan which encourages Chinese universities to significantly improve AI education by 2030. The MoE has also called for promotion of programming classes among elementary and middle schools.

Significant private university starts construction in Zhejiang

Westlake University – China’s new research-oriented private university started construction on 3 April in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province. The university was founded in October 2018 and has recruited 85 world-class scientists and enrolled 139 doctoral students. The Westlake University is led by former Vice-President of Tsinghua University and world renowned biophysicist, Professor Shi Yigong.

New Ministry of Education approved joint institute between ANU and Shandong University (CHN)

The MoE has announced a new approved joint institute between Australian National University and Shandong University –SDU-ANU Joint Science College, Shandong University. The joint institute will have an enrolment quota of 1200 and offer bachelor degree courses in Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, Applied Physics, Applied Chemistry, and Biological Sciences. Graduates will receive bachelor degree qualification from ANU and Shandong University. It is not compulsory for students to complete part of the program in Australia to receive the Australian qualification.
 

National Foundation for Australia-China Relations established to strengthen bilateral relations with China

Building on the pioneering work of the Australia-China Council, the Australian Government has established a new and innovative National Foundation to boost ties with China. The foundation will harness efforts of the private sector, peak bodies, NGOs, cultural organisations, state and federal agencies and the Chinese-Australian community to improve engagement with China.


Australia: Automation will make huge demands on universities

A report prepared by McKinsey & Company says the widespread adoption of automation will disrupt workforce and eliminate jobs unless universities and colleges educate thousands more professionals. The report shows that 46% of the current work activities in Australia could be automated by 2030 and suggested that schools should teach students new skills to prepare them for the future work environment. The report predicts that flexible short certificate courses and foundational trainings will likely to be popular.

More than 90% of Chinese minors are online, official survey finds

Internet penetration rate among minors ages six to 18 in China is 93.7%, according to a survey conducted by China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC), totalling around 169 million youth. In comparison, the internet penetration rate of China’s population as a whole is only 57.7%.


China to host 2019 World Industrial Design Conference

The 2019 World Industrial Design Conference and the Industrial Design World Expo will be held in October this year in the Chinese coastal city of Yantai, Shandong Province, according to a press briefing by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) on 29 March.
 

China recognises 13 new tech jobs including AI developers, e-sports players and drone pilots

The Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, the State Administration for Market Regulation and the National Bureau of Statistics have jointly issued an updated professions list. The new job titles includes: professional gamers, drone pilots, robotics operator and software engineers in areas like AI, Internet of Things (IoT), big data and cloud computing. It marks the first time since 2015 that authorities have included new jobs into a list of nearly 19,000 official professions in China.
