Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
 
Our partner in ministry, the Rev. Dr. Walter Phillip Fogarty, died on March 29, 2019.
 
Phil Fogarty was born March 22, 1939, in Washington, D.C. He was baptized at Luther Place Memorial Church (Washington, D.C.) and confirmed at Hope Lutheran Church (College Park, Maryland). Phil was a graduate of the University of Maryland (BA, 1961) and the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg (now United Lutheran Seminary; BDiv, 1964; STM, 1973; DMin, 1979). He was ordained by the Maryland Synod of the Lutheran Church in America on June 3, 1964.

Phil's first call was as a Board Missionary in Stevensville, Michigan, where he served until 1966, when he was called as Associate Pastor at Christ Lutheran Church (Baltimore, Maryland). In 1968, He was called as the Pastor of Haven Lutheran Church (Hagerstown, Maryland). He was called as Associate Pastor at Evangelical Lutheran Church (Frederick, Maryland) in 1975, and in 1984 was called as Senior Pastor of the congregation until his retirement in 2002. In retirement, he served as the Interim Pastor at Zion Lutheran Church (Middletown, Maryland); Christ Lutheran Church (Hagerstown, Maryland); Trinity Lutheran Church (Hagerstown, Maryland); Harmony Lutheran Church (Myersville, Maryland); Trinity Lutheran Church (Boonsboro, Maryland); and St. John Lutheran Church (Thurmont, Maryland). In 2012, he returned to Evangelical (Frederick) to join the staff part-time.

Walter Phillip Fogarty and Donna D. Anderson were married in College Park, Maryland on June 19, 1960. He is also survived by his daughter, Tanya Marten, and her husband, Jonathan. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 6 at 11 a.m. at Evangelical Lutheran Church (31 E Church Street, Frederick, MD 21701). Pastors, Deacons, and Members of the Order of St. Stephen are invited to vest and process (ready by 10:40 a.m.), and the color of the day is purple. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the American Heart Association (217 E Redwood Street, 11th Floor, Baltimore, MD 21202) in Pastor Fogarty's name.
