Newsletter

April 2019
Welcome to our April newsletter! This month our featured resource is UpToDate from Wolters Kluwer. UpToDate makes finding clinical answers easier by providing current, evidence-based information in an organised, searchable format - and it's free to all EKHUFT staff and students!

Also this month: find out how to access BMJ Best Practice, the Health Service Journal, and more!
UpToDate is a highly regarded evidence-based, peer-reviewed information resource providing clinical knowledge summaries. These are comprised of a synthesis of the latest evidence, current literature, and recommendations for patient care.

Content is continuously updated by UpToDate's physician editors, ensuring that the best evidence is always available.
 > How to access
There are two ways you can access UpToDate:
With an OpenAthens account
You can log in to UpToDate from home, work, or on the move - all you  need is an OpenAthens account.

Register for an account - it's quick, free, and will give you access to all our other resources as well.

From an EKHUFT staff PC
Every EKHUFT staff member has direct, login-free access to UpToDate when using a Trust-networked PC.

Look for the UpToDate icon in your app launcher next time you log in, and follow the link.

A quick note about OpenAthens accounts

Access to most of our online resources, including UpToDate, is via the OpenAthens single-sign-on service. If you've got an account already, you're all set. If not, register for an OpenAthens account - it's all free!

Please note that locally funded resources may vary depending on which NHS organisation you belong to. UpToDate is only available to staff and students who have an OpenAthens account registered to East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust.

 News & updates

BMJ Best Practice
We're excited to announce that we have recently gained access to BMJ Best Practice, the point of care tool that draws on the latest evidence-based research to offer step-by-step guidance on diagnosis, prognosis treatment, and prevention. A robust evidence-based methodology and expert opinion are updating the resource on a daily basis.

Access is free with an EKHUFT OpenAthens account. Just follow these steps to log in:
1. Go to bestpractice.bmj.com. Choose Login, and then select the OpenAthens option on the next page.

2. After entering your OpenAthens credentials, you will then be promtped to create a personal account on BMJ Best Practice.

(This is so you can track your CPD activity, generate certificates, and log into the app.)
• You can access BMJ Best Practice from any device, anywhere.

• You can also access it via your app launcher when logged into an EKHUFT-networked PC. The app has also been added to EKHUFT's iOS app bundles.

• Download the app for your device by searching BMJ Best Practice in the App Store or Google Play Store.

Health Service Journal
Don't forget that as well as the thousands of journals you can access with your OpenAthens account, we also have access to the Health Service Journal.

Access  to this journal is slightly different to our usual OpenAthens route however, and requires the setting up of a separate account. If you would like to have full-text access to the HSJ, you will need to:
  • be a registered member at any of our three libraries (Canterbury, Ashford, or Margate)
  • have an NHSMail account
Please get in touch with the library you are registered with to request an account.
Please note that you don't have to be employed by EKHUFT to get an account for the HSJ, meaning that GPs and community staff from other local Trusts can gain access, provided that you are also a registered library member.
