Staff Spotlights: Nick Gawdun and David Ross

We spoke to Nick Gawdun (Marines), ME IT department, to hear about his experience serving in the military and working at Georgia Tech.

David Ross has been the director of the Veterans Resource Center at Georgia Tech since 2013. The Center is dedicated to serving students who are veterans, military reservists, guard members, and dependents. David spoke with us about what he is striving to do in order to provide for veterans on campus.

COESCAC Updates — Functional Action Teams

Eme Anderson (BME) is the new COESCAC Chair. Many thanks to former Chair Robert Simon (CEE) for his service. COESCAC would also like to thank Tasha Torrence (ECE) and Ian Tumey (ChBE) for their service as they depart the council. Finally, COESCAC is welcoming two new members, Barbara Howard (ECE) and Michael Anderson (CEE).

In response to the breakout sessions at November’s Staff Engagement Day, CoE Functional Action Teams have been created. They have had their initial meetings and are on their way to effecting change for their respective functions.

You can listen to the keynote speech from AE alum Admiral James "Sandy" Winnefeld if you missed the November session or just need some inspiration!

As always COESCAC wants to hear from you — please email coescac@coe.gatech.edu with any questions or suggestions.

Five Minutes Matter

We asked some CoE staff members what they could/would do in five minutes to make Georgia Tech or the College a better place. Here are some of their suggestions:

“Let co-workers, former co-workers, bosses, know how they positively impact/impacted my career!” – Lisa Cox, HR Representative, ISyE
“I would contact a fellow CoE team member I haven’t talked to in a while to catch up, get more information about what they do at GT, and see how my service at GT has an impact on their work.” – JJ Martino, IT Support Professional Leader, ME

“Compliment someone on a job well done.” – Ashlee Gardner, Communications Manager, ECE

“Put yourself in the other person’s shoes and ask: What do you need/want done? How fast do you need/want done? How much would it help others, and you, based on what is needed/wanted done?” –  Angelica Remolina, Engineering & Scientific Application Portfolio Manager, CoE Dean’s Office

“Greet everyone as if they are your best friend!! SMILE, it may seem corny but it can change someone else’s outlook for the day. People often forget that our positive and negative emotions are pushed out, like waves. In turn, these impact others we don’t know. See someone lost, help get them to the place they need. Even if it means you have to walk them to the location. In the theme of putting yourself in someone else’s shoes, remember how difficult it is to find a new place.” – Rudy Paratchek, Program Support Coordinator, ISyE

"I would stop by a coworker’s office to extend praise and/or a friendly greeting, keep an open door policy, or volunteer my time." – Scarlett Earley, Sr. Development Assistant, BME
Kristen Roberts, ECE
