Follow the Yellow Brick Road as "The Wizard of Oz" Comes to East Lansing

The Riverwalk Theatre and All-of-us Express Children’s Theatre (AECT) are partnering this spring to bring "The Wizard of Oz" to the East Lansing Hannah Community Center (ELHCC), 819 Abbot Road. The co-production also marks the 30th anniversary for both theatres! Over 80 youth and adults will take part in this special production, with Tom Ferris as the director. Ferris is one of the founders of the Riverwalk Theatre and has won numerous awards for his acting, directing and tech designs. Show dates/times are as follows:
  • April 26 & May 3:  7 p.m.
  • May 2 (group showing): 10 a.m.
  • April 27 & May 4: 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.
  • April 28 & May 5: 3 p.m.
Tickets are $10 for children (18 and under) and $12 for adults (18 and above). Community members can purchase tickets ahead of time by visiting the ELHCC Box Office or by calling (517) 333-2580 ext. 0. Tickets can also be purchased online at www.showtix4u.com/events/wizard. Production of  "Fahrenheit 451" Coming in May

The AECT studio class is excited to bring author Ray Bradbury's novel "Fahrenheit 451" to the ELHCC for two exciting performances. The studio class is an in-depth study of theatre for youth, ages 11-18, and this year's students have been studying the novel, its script and various aspects of theatre.

There will be two performance dates: Friday, May 10 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, May 11 at 7 p.m. Space is limited to only 100 tickets per show. Youth Drama Classes being Offered this Summer

The AECT is offering a variety of popular drama camps this summer. Participants will spend the week working on a mini-production and will have the chance to explore the world of theatre. Each week features a different theme and will include roles for all participants, even those that don’t want to be on stage. On Friday morning, participants will perform their show to family and friends.

Both one-week and two-week camps will be offered. One-week camps are $130/members; $155/non-members and two-week camps are $250/members; $290/non-members. These camps fill up fast and space is limited!

Crystal Awards!

Community members are invited to East Lansing’s 2019 Crystal Awards! The 2019 Crystal Awards community reception will be Thursday, April 18 at 5 p.m. at the East Lansing Hannah Community Center.

The Crystal Awards are hosted annually by the East Lansing City Council. Three to four individuals, businesses, professionals, nonprofits or community groups are honored for their outstanding contribution to community life in East Lansing. Recipients are dedicated to enhancing the East Lansing community, demonstrate a passion and commitment to creating a vibrant community and serve as an inspiration to others. 
 
It's never too early to nominate them for next year. Nominations can be submitted at www.cityofeastlansing.com/crystalawards

Play Like a Kid Again, Sign Up for Adult Soccer!

The East Lansing Department of Parks, Recreation and Arts (ELPRA) is offering an Adult 4 v 4 Soccer League that starts on Tuesday, May 14 and finishes the last week of June with a tournament. Each team is guaranteed eight officiated games and at least one tournament game. The cost is $350 per team, and with six people on your roster, it’s less than $60 per person.

They are expected to have men’s, women’s and coed teams. Depending on registration numbers, there will be divisions for 18+ and 30+ age groups. Games will be played on Tuesday and Thursday nights, but some weeks may be a double-header. Games will be primarily played at the East Lansing Hannah Community Center, but some games might take place at the East Lansing Soccer Complex.

Apply to Work as a Lifeguard at the East Lansing Family Aquatic Center 

The East Lansing Family Aquatic Center has open positions for summer lifeguards and will continue to accept applications until all openings are filled. Applicants must be at least 16 years old, have flexible schedules and be willing to work various shifts seven days a week. The Aquatic Center leadership staff will conduct lifeguard certification in May.

Sign Up for Adult Softball Summer League

ELPRA offers a wide assortment of adult softball opportunities, ranging from recreational to competitive. The City of East Lansing will have men’s and coed leagues on various nights of the week starting in late April and running through the end of July. Information packets will be emailed to all 2018 teams. If you wish to be added to the information list, please email Recreation Coordinator Jim Jennings at JLjennings@cityofeastlansing.com.
