CWRU Awarded Seal of Excellence for
Commitment to Study Abroad

Case Western Reserve University is helping increase and diversify the number of undergraduate students who study abroad as part of a global movement.

CWRU has been awarded the Institute of International Education (IIE)’s Seal of Excellence for its strategic commitment to the Generation Study Abroad initiative, which is working to double and diversify the number of U.S. students studying abroad by the end of the decade to about 600,000 participants.

IIE launched Generation Study Abroad in 2014 and now has more than 800 partners around the world.

When CWRU joined the initiative, it committed to increasing and diversifying the number undergraduate students who study abroad by 50% by 2020 and was awarded two grants in the amount of $7,500 each in 2016 and 2017. The Center for International Affairs matched the grants and awarded scholarships to CWRU students who studied abroad.

After sending 655 students abroad during the 207-2018 academic year, CWRU was recognized for achieving its Generation Study Abroad goal at the 2019 IIE Summit.

“Case Western Reserve University consistently demonstrates a strong commitment to widening access and making international a part of what it means to be educated in Cleveland. Its Center for International Affairs is helping to write the guidebook for us all,” said Allan E. Goodman, President and Chief Executive Officer for IIE.

Fulbright Opportunities You Might Not
Be Aware Of
The Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program offers opportunities to teach and conduct research in more than 125 countries around the world. The program is always evolving, and when the director of Fulbright at the Institute of International Education visited CWRU this month, she shared some new and little-known options to engage in an international experience. Fulbright Flex Awards allow scholars to complete two or three short-term segments during a two-year period instead of one extended stay in a host country. The new Public Policy Fellowship provides opportunities for early and mid-career professionals to serve in a foreign government ministry or institution in partner governments. There are also specific award options for postdocs. And if you're looking for less competitive areas to apply, consider the Middle East or a partnership award in Spain.

Autumn Beechler Stebing is an Assistant Director of Education Abroad in the Center for International Affairs. Her career path began with three study abroad experiences of her own in college. She was a first generation student with a packed course load, and didn’t think studying abroad was possible, but she made it work three times and ended up teaching abroad for five years post-graduation in Micronesia, on the island of Saipan, and also in Mexico.

“I realized while working and travelling internationally just how few Americans go abroad, especially for extended periods of time, and became very impassioned about using my skills and expertise to work to change that, especially in a time where there is so much intolerance and misunderstanding,” said Beechler Stebing, “International experiences help us realize how alike we all are, which, to me, is a welcome contrast to the divisiveness seen so often in today’s political and social landscape”

Now, she advises CWRU students daily on the various study abroad opportunities available to them that will meet their degree, career, and personal goals.  She also collaborates with campus partners regularly to make semester and academic year study abroad experiences more attainable for students.

Beechler Stebing says she really enjoys working with faculty, staff and students to find opportunities to make study abroad experiences more accessible, and she is passionate about helping students translate their experiences into their resumes and job interview talking points, “I know firsthand how the impact of studying abroad extends beyond education into personal development and career skills that can truly make a difference for their future.”
