The CTE is excited to launch a fresh, new take on our newsletter. With ConneCTEd, we will keep you informed monthly of our events, programs, and team, along with research and resources on teaching and learning.

This issue is all about firsts: this is our first issue of ConneCTEd, we recently launched some first-of-its-kind programming, and the first days of class are nearly upon us. The CTE team wishes you a great start to the semester and we hope you will continue connecting with us throughout the year.

What and Who is New at the CTE

Say goodbye
to our old logo...

...and hello
to our new look!

UVA Acts is a new interactive theatre program for departments and schools that promotes preventative practices for fostering equitable, vibrant spaces for working and learning at UVA. Faculty can now book a performance for the fall semester through September 15. Two programs are currently available--The Inclusive Teaching Toolkit and Search Committee Signals--with another on the way.

The CTE held its first-ever CDI 2.X event on Specifications Grading. 40 instructors participated in the August 7 session, where they designed specifications grading systems for their courses.
We're also working on future CDI 2.X events. Stay tuned for details on our Advanced Collaborative Learning Techniques session coming later this fall.

As for who is new, we'd first like to introduce you to Dr. Lynn Mandeltort. Lynn will join the CTE as the inaugural Assistant Director of Engineering Education Initiatives, developing and implementing educational development programs to support teaching and learning in the School of Engineering and Applied Science. Lynn's first day is Tuesday, September 3.
Cortney McEniry came to us in December 2018 to launch our UVA Acts program. As the Artistic Director and Program Manager, Cortney works with faculty, administrators, students, and local artists to create interactive performances around issues of equity in the workplace and classroom.
Kristin Sloane started at the CTE in March 2019 to handle our communications and marketing. She leads our email marketing efforts and maintains our website and social media presence. She strives to enhance and elevate our visibility across Grounds and beyond.

Resources: Getting Ready for Your First Day

The CTE has compiled a brief list of recommended reads to help you get your teaching off on the right foot this semester.

Upcoming CTEvents

Teaching as a Graduate Student
Thursday, August 22 | 8:30 AM to 5 PM
Nau and Gibson Hall

Our day-long workshop will introduce first-time graduate student teaching assistants to teaching at UVA. These practical and interactive sessions address teaching across disciplines and are beneficial for both new and experienced teachers. It's not too late to register.
CTE Consultations

Signups for consultations begin next week. Our trained CTE faculty, graduate, and undergraduate consultants can meet with you to discuss general teaching topics, course design, classroom-based research, and curriculum (re)design. We are also able to observe your classroom and solicit feedback from your students. The priority deadline to submit a request for the semester is Friday, September 6. We will send out an email with more details next week. Learn more about these services.
